CPU-Problem

Hi,folks,
i have a silly but impotaint problem:
i have a compaq deskpro ep/sb 6350 series pc with a
compaq 041ch 440bx chipset(AGPSet FW82443BX,SL2T5),slot 1,fsb 100.
my cpu at this time is a pentium III Katmai 550Mhz sl3fj 512Kb/2V/30,8W/80°C/0,25 micron.
I want to upgrade to a better one like pentium III coppermine,gut possibilities should be:
800 Mhz: sl4by,sl4kf(sl457/sl3xr);
850Mhz : sl4kh;
866 MHz : sl47m;
900 MHz : sl4kk;
1000 MHz : sl4kl <===my choice !!!
I don't know however if these cpu's will run on my mobo;they are too expensive !
If i am sure one fo them ore some of them will be ok for my mobo then i'll play at the ebay!

It's probably just not worth it. I'd say it's an excellent time to upgrade more than just the CPU.

I would also say that it would probably be a good time to do a little more upgrading than just the CPU. Unfortunately, a computer that old is upgradeable, it just will cost more than it is necessarilly worth.

To build a new one will in the long run be cheaper, as even a CPU upgrade on your current model will be lacking and leaving you wanting more in a year. Of course the up front cost will be a bit more for a new one.

It will probably be better to look into a new system, as trying to upgrade something that old works like this:

1. Order new motherboard and CPU.
2. The RAM doesn't fit?!?!? %&^%&^@*
3. Okay got the RAM.
4. The video card doesn't work either?!?!? %^$%^%
5. Okay got that in.
6. My hard drive is REALLY SLOW.
7. What's the electronics cooking smell? OOOH FIRE COMING OUT OF THE POWER SUPPLY!!!!!!
8. Try to explain to your wife why you just need to spend a "Little" more, and then everything will be OK.
9. Order new power supply and hard drive.
10. Receive power supply and some random cable the warehouse found during annual "Sweep under everything day"
11. Go through phone support and send cable on it's way back and get your hard drive shipped.
12. Install Windows on new hard drive.
13. Midway through, your 6 year old CDROM drive dies.
14. ^&%&^$@#
15. More $@^$#&*&#%

You get the point. May as well just order a new system, either a prebuilt or put it together yourself.

Prebuilt advantage: It should work when you get it.
Build yourself advantage: You will feel like such a stud when you get it working.

Edit: I'm only guessing this would be your first build....

i appreciate your good sense of humor;
as a matter of fact this is not the first time that i build a pc and will be not the last...
but i'm wondering if anyone could help me to bring this old one to the edge of its potential,
so please give me correct answers and not offers for a new pc.

Best option: Donate that rig to the needy before you spend one single dollar on it.

Second best option: Celeron 1.1Ghz 100Mhz 128K FCPGA with a slot-1 adapter . You could surely find it cheaper used. I bought one for an old Compaq 5BW250 Presario computer (700 Celeron) a friend had (make sure your motherboard supports it!). I think it had an 810E chipset, though...


EDIT: On second thought, just throw that thing out!

This is a 3 year old article. It discusses the K6-2/3 processors, but other than that shows the RAM, hard drive, and graphics card upgrades cost/performance ratio as well.

As far as the processor upgrade goes, as long as it is the correct format it should work. However, it might also need a BIOS upgrade to handle it???

You might want to try poking around compaq and intel's sites for upgraded BIOS versions before you throw it in. And track down any jumpers or DIP switches (I don't even know if they would be on it) so you'll know where they are if you have to change settings.

Sorry, I don't know a heck of a lot about the slot-1's. That would be the other problem with the older hardware upgrades, they're not in the limelight anymore (somewhat like in 3-4 years, the phrase nforce-2 will elicit a blank stare), so you might just have to give it a whirl and see what happens. I god a look at the homepage of powerleap and found an appropriate adapter : PL-iP3/T with a celeron 1,4 GHz for my mobo(this is my next cpu)-there is a search engine and you can find really the right one adapter for your mobo,the price is acceptable- for me.
There is also an adapter from the Company,New Wave Upgrades: NW Slot-T Adapter,like i found it in the link posted from you ,i found also an another link
with this information :New Wave Upgrades' adapters are appropriate for Compaq deskpro EP 6350 series....
So, thus i found my solution with the great help from you indeed!
