CPU problem...or is it?

I'm building this new system and all the parts are 100% brand new. When I put this system together last night and booted it up, it started up for about 10 seconds then it automatically shut off. I saw ram counting, i went into bios and automatically shut off after I hear this slightly higher pitched fan sound. I switched PS and it still did the same problem. I switched fans with a computer I know worked and was built for O/C and it still did the same problem of shutting itself off. I turned on the motherboard w/out cpu and it was stable and stayed on until I wanted to turn it off but no beeps telling me cpu was not present.

I am running a ECS k75SA pro and an athlon XP 2400+ CPU. Could this be a faulty CPU somehow? I would greatly GREATLY appreciate any advice or information on this as I am trying to figure out what I should do. I do not have a spare XP CPU to test my hypothesis.

On that same note, does anyone know if Fry's oem CPUs, when sold to customers, record the CPU serial number or something identifying the cpu? =) Is it easy to return? hehe

Thanks y'all.

I've got several of these mobos out in the field, and one here in the womb. Runs fine with everything I can throw at it - but I have had several problems with OEM CPUs from Fry's.

But the first test is to remove the board from the case, put it on a non-conductive pad, and try running it there. No power switch, just short the power jumpers with a screwdriver. If the problem persists, try a) different power supply, and b) different ram.

I have built a few computers around the k7s5a... While not great for overclocking, always made a nice system...

Do you get any beep codes?

Reseat the video, ram and CPU...

Also, is the ram 2x256 or a 512 chip?

If so, try one at a time..
