OK so I somehow fried my CPU and motherboard . . . long story . . . to long and it'll make me look stupid . . . so here is my question . . .

Can CPUs (let's say an XP 1800+) be the source of a system crashing? I was always under the impression that they either work or don't work . . . ie there is no in between . . .

(if you want the story here it is . . . I was putting on a Volcano 7 on my Epox 8kha+ and XP 1800+ and some how it fried my janx. But I didn't realize this so I put another 1800+ in it but it with the same volcano 7. Then I switched the heatsink/fan to the original AMD retail HSF. Now my system boots up when it is fairly cool (below 40 C) and then crashes after that. So either it is the mobo or the CPU. I can boot from winxp cd but stops when it says "Loading Windows" and I have tried multiple other RAM chips and HDs. This is where the CPU question comes from. Any comments in general would be appreciated too . . . like why the volcano would do such a thing)

Comments? THANKS AT . . .

It's possible, but rare and hard to do. However only running at very low temps IS the type of behavior such a stressed CPU is likely to exhibit, so maybe you did manage to pull it off :p

The motherboard is still probably a more likely candidate though. Bending a motherboard too much can do all kinds of bad things, as can excess heat or voltage.

I never experienced that with an AMD processor, but my 1.6A (which I overvolted too much) caused all kinds of havoc, but still ran.

Have you sat in bios and watched the temps? Do they regulate or continue to climb?
