CPU problem / disabling L1 cache fixes problem ??

I have bought an ASUS A7V and 1.1 GHz Thunderbird. I get corrupt file messages installing Windows 98. I have tried different hard drives, cables, memory, CD, CD-ROM and BIOS's(1004D, 1006). When I disable the L1 cache in the BIOS, I don't get these errors. Is the CPU bad or is it something else. I am using system defaults in the BIOS and only the video card is installed(Hercules Prophet II GTS).

It is reading and writing files wrong. If I run ScanDisk on another computer with the hard drive it finds the errors.

Thanks

Does the other system pick up errors in scan disk when you disable L1 and install? If you install the patch for fast ide caching, then re-enable L1 do you still have problems? I'm wondering if diabling L1 is slowing down your system enough to allow windows to properly install itself.

No, the other system doesn't find errors with ScanDisk with L1 disable install. WHat is the patch for fast ide caching?

thanks,

It's available at the windows 98 update page. Just tried a quick search at microsoft, couldn't find it as a stand alone. It's supposed to slow windows down when accessing the hard drives so the hard drive cache has enough time to be writen to the disk before shutdown.
