i'm sure if i dig thru this very comprehensive site i might find the answer to this question, but i'll ask it here in hopes of a short quick answer...

i've been watching the "chip watch" column in cpu mag, and over the last couple months cpu prices for the midrange chips are going up considerably. anybody know why?

with upcoming pricecuts, very much doubt the prices are rising, I'm pretty they are coming down ? you might be checking wrong, it might be the currency the prices are in is losing strenght or you're watching at and older socket whose cpu's are being phased out ?

I just checked pricewatch, and the only ones I saw going up were old P4's Athlon XP's, and the very top end FX-62, X6800 extreme, etc...

Just making sure -- Are the C2D price cuts still going to happen July 22nd?

That'd be pretty slick but pretty annoying if they rose the prices dramatically, then cut them in half.

Perhaps Intel's worried about AMD's comment about their business practices and a monopoly investigation? That seems less likely than my first guess :)

they are trying to get as much money as they can before the price cuts. also, they figure that they won't lose any sales between now and july 22 if they raise them a little bit. newegg does that all the time. I paid 89.99 after mir for pc28500 crucial ballistix a couple of weeks ago. now there is no mir and they are 204.99!! When I bought my fx55, it was 199, the next day it was 129, then it went back up the day after that.

a couple of things...

the column name is "watching the chips fall", not chipwatch.

also, as markfwf900 correctly points out, in the current issue there is not much price rise over last month. but check last month's and i believe you'll see that the rise in price for the c2d stuff went up quite a bit.

just trying to get the facts straight, nothing worse than inaccurate posting, guilty as charged

Yes, the Intel price cuts are still going to happen on July 22.

Newegg tends to adjust it's prices by demand (minorly) and supply (mostly) .

If they run low on an item; they ramp up the price, substantially. When they get new stock in - the price goes down. I think this is applied to every single thing in the entire store.

I'm very curious what sort of algorithm they do this by.
