There's a Gateway DX 4860 that came with that CPU, but that CPU was first launched in 2011, NOT 2006.. You can upgrade the CPU to an I7 3770 for about $140 and it would still be a decent PC to continue using.

Might not work depending on what BIOS updates are available for it. The generation specific variant he's looking for is the I7 2600, the 3770 is newer and might not be supported.

thanks guys... yeah, I am just posting one wrong piece of info after another about my current PC o_O
I *thought* I had bought it in 2006 but clearly I was mistaken, I probably bought it in Spring 2010, it's still 7 years old. The computer is not slow or holding me up but still 7 years is old, the PS and HDD are original and could give up the ghost anytime.

In any case, building a new PC is a fun project so I thought why not.. $900 isn't going to kill me even if I don't really "need" to upgrade.

Here is the parts I am thinking of:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/FHdQvV

The CPU and MB combo i'm getting for $430 from Microcenter so the total is more like $883, I think that's quite a good price, what do you think?

Feel free to comment. For now, I am going to do a swap of my Sapphire Radeon 6670 PCIe 2.0 card into the new box and I will get a new video card later if I find it's necessary. As I said i'm not a gamer :)

My only comment would be to save $25 and get the vanilla 1700 instead of the 1700X. Since you're getting a watercooler, spending more on the X seems like a small waste. Never a bad thing to have a spare stock Wraith cooler sitting around either.

Samsung SSDs are on sale at MC this weekend, too, so that extra $25 would help get you closer to a 512GB SSD (if you need it) or faster RAM, or some cable management accessories, RGB stuff if you're into that...

The thing is that the special deal of $100 off is only available with the 1700x...

so it's the 1700X for $350 + $50 for the MB ($100 off) = $400 + tax
or
1700 for $320 + $150 for the MB = $470 + tax

so the 1700 is $70 more expensive actually due to the current combo deal offer. Yeah, the cooler is an additional $50 but even with that factored in still cheaper.

If you can get what you want with a 1700x over a 1700 then get that. Just make sure the Mobo you are getting with the deal is one you want. Otherwise don't pigeonhole yourself into that board for the deal.

finally bought all my parts :D Now time to start the build, just waiting on some of my shipments!!! Thanks for all the info. I am re-using my Radeon HD6670 for now, will get a GTX 1050Ti if I need one.

Total cost: $903.09

I'm going to try to port my Win 10 Pro license to the new machine, if it works good, otherwise I have to get a new OS as well for around $130.

not sure why it is flagging as incompatible, strange. I've researched around and the gammaxx400 provides out of the box support for am4 sockets. Also several people have built with exact cooler, MB and CPU :)
It uses the latches to attach.
