the slk 800 i got came with 4 same pads which i assume go on the corners of the cpu but my 1700+ already has them. are they infact meant to be put on the cpu? if so should i just disrgard them since the cpu already has them? lastly are the 2 long and thin pads that come with the slk 800 meant to but put adjacent to the socket to prevent the motherboard from being scratched during installation??? thanx

Yes, you need to use the pads, as the heatsink is too narrow to rest on the existing ones on your cpu. Here's a link to thermalright's installation instructions.

Nope.. the shim has those holes that would allow the existings pad to come through.. otherwise it would prevent the heatsink from making proper contact with the CPU.

You put the pads on the bottom of the SLK-800. There should be 4 markings underneath corresponding to where they should be placed.

The reason for this is that the SLK-800's design makes it too narrow to reach the pads on the cpu, so Thermalright packaged those extra pads so the heatsink won't crush the core ;)

Well, it's purpose is to protect the cpu core.. I did the same thing the first time I got an SLK-800, but it really didn't do anything.

However, there's a greater danger of crushing the core when/if the heatsink is ever moved while attached to the socket (this also means removal and installation of heatsink). Just be aware of that and you should be alright. :)

thats for the info, i had put them on top of the exisitng pads but as soon as i saw your post, i unmounted the heatsink and put the pads on the back (the spots are REALLY tiny).
