CPU Overheating

When I turn on my computer my Asus Probe keeps popping up and warning me that my "CPU Fan is Below Threshold", and it keeps doing this until the Asus Probe v2.23.01 pops up and warns me that.. "CPU Temperature overheating" than my computer turns off.
So the next time I turned it on I looked in the Asus Probe to see what my settings were, here's what I found...
Settings: CPU Temperature Threshold 72c
MB Temperature Threshold 75c
CPU Fan Threshold 600 rpm
Since I've had the computer 2 years now, the Asus Probe Always popped up warning me about overheating and a few other warnings, but the computer never shut down on me. I also noticed that I don't have a Power Fan, or a Chassis Fan, I noticed this because the Asus Probe has blank readings for them.
I hope this information is helpful in finding out whats wrong with my computer and what I could do to fix it.
Thanks, Lokey

Easiest thing to do is pop the side off your case and power it up. See if your CPU fan is spinning. From the warnings you're getting, it sounds like it may have died on you. If it did die, get it replaced ASAP - I don't know how the AthlonXP's are, but I know I killed one Athlon Thunderbird processor by not cooling it properly.

I apoligize if you've done that already - but you didn't mention in your post if you did.

CPU Fan Threshold 600 rpm
never set such a low threshold, most cpu fans run @ 2500 rpm, with such a low threshold the fan will stop spinning.
set the threshold @1600 to 1800 rpm,and work down, most just quit below 1200 rpm.

I think the threshold in this case is when the warning pops up about his fans (ie: 600rpm and lower, warn the user). Maybe I'm wrong though, I haven't used an ASUS motherboard in a while.

The fans may not be spinning fast enough if your processor is heating to the point where it shuts the PC down. Can you monitor the speed at which the cpu fan spinning with the ASUS probe program?

If there is a shim between the CPU and the heatsink, take it out and run it through your trash compacter or something. Remove the heatsink, clean the CPU and heatsink, re-apply high-quality thermal grease to your CPU and reinstall your heatsink like the third photo.

not sure if someone said this...but it might be that you plugged the fan moniter in the wrong slot.

i did that with this comp i just built and it keep beeping and i changed the fan slot and it worked

The probes reading for CPU fan is around 4100. But it has dropped to practically nothing within a second.
Could a heatsink cause that?

Are you still running with the case open? If the CPU fan is dying, it might be shutting off and turning back on again.

If the CPU fan is running all the time, then I'm stumped. I'd still try and replace the HSF though, they're pretty cheap.

Edit: Also might want to repost this over in Cases and Cooling, or PM a moderator and have them move it there - the more specific forums aren't traveled as heavily as General Hardware, but the "Experts" tend to hang out in the specific forums a little more.

Thanks guys for the help. I cleaned the fan and sprayed WD40 in it. It doen't overheat anymore, but now it keeps blinking "CPU Fan below Threshold".

Not a good idea to be spraying WD40 around inside a computer. That is a very easy way to short out a motherboard, video card, audio card, etc. At best, I would remove the fan from the PC, clean it and lubricate it far from the other components.

Thanks for the responce......and that 's just what I did I took out the fan, peeled back the label that's in the center and sprayed a little WD40, than put the lable back. All seems to be working good, Thanks
