CPU overheating problem

Ok, for some reason my processor has been idling at very hot temperatures lately (65 C, 149F). It's annoying because the fan is always on at full blast. I have the stock cooling fan on it still. I did a fresh reapply of thermal paste...it's now idling at 57 C (134 F). I don't get it. My old newcastle core would idle at 99F.....this is really pissing me off. What I don't understand is that my motherboard is still at the same temp as always (about 91 F, 33 C). So I don't think it's a fan issue, otherwise that'd be hotter than normal too. I posted in the cooling forum, but I'm thinking this could be a cpu issue, not a cooling one.

oh crap, sorry! AMD X2 3800, on an Asus a8-v deluxe. I haven't made any recent changes to it. No idea why this is happening. It's back to idling at 60C now.

These AMD run pretty hot.

Are you sure it is idling? Some malware can run your CPU near 100% but you will usually notice a general system slowdown.
Could it be a temp probe malfunction? Heatsink should be so hot you can't hold your finger on it for long. What program are you using to determine CPU temp?

core temp, shows the load at nearly zilch. It's funny, I've upgraded a few times, and now this final processor is 90nm, but the smaller they've gotten, the hotter they've run.

Even my 5000+ x2 at 3.15GHz didn't run that hot. My phenom x3 at 3.0Ghz only hits 44C

Could be a stuck sensor, see if your mobo has a bios fix for it?

What is your voltage @ in bios and what does it report in cpu-z. Are you overclocking this chip or is it @ stock levels. if overclocking what is the clock speed and was it stable.

Hi, the stock speed is 2.0 ghz. Everything's running at stock. Vcore is at 1.5

Yeah 1.5 vcore isn't stock for this chip. Reset CMOS if possible. The BIOS might be thinking that stock is something different than what it should be.

This is weird: Today I boot up, and it's idling at 43 Celsius...still a bit warm, but much better...maybe the thermal paste had to get broken in? I'm going to reboot and set the vcore back to 1.35


edit: Core temp shows vcore at 1.35, Asus probe shows it at 1.5

ok, set it to 1.35 in bios...asus probe shows it at 1.31 but the temperature is down to about 38 celsius at idle.

I wouldn't place a lot of stock in Asus Probe.

Agree, get realtemp or coretemp for better accuracy on temps and cpu-z or HWMonitor for voltages.

My CPU in my primary rig idles at 34C and loads at 58C. I do have a $15 Thermaltake HSF and some AS Ceramique.

Those temps are HOTT.
