I just got an epox 8k7a and athlon 1.2 ghz. I got a volcano 2 heatsink ( I was told it would be adequate as long as I don't overclock. But My system wouldn't get into windows at 1.2 ghz. I have a desk fan over the CPU and now and its been stable for 20 minutes. Its summer here so it is hot (80F). My case temps before the desk fan was around 100 degrees F and the cpu temp would peek at just above 50C before crashing. with the desk fan the case temp is 24.7C and the cpu is at 40.7C with Seti running. My question is what is wrong? I have 1 exhaust fan below the cpu. one 80mm in front, 2 80mm at the top of the full tower sucking air(not sure if these are doing much good). If I can't guilt trip the company or thermaltake into giving me a better heatsink then what should i do?. I was thinking arctic silver instead of the stock stuff, what else? I suppose I better get a new heatsink(Man am I gonna be strapped for cash)
 
If you switch between C and F anymore my brain is gonna explode 😉

100F is ~ 37C...that's pretty hot for a case temp. Right now, my room is 20C, case is 22C and 1.33 bird is 34C. Even with a room temperature approaching 26-27C (80F) you shouldn't see case temps that high with adequate ventilation. That is why you see such a drastic reduction when you stick a desktop fan over your case. If your case is 37C, a chip running 40C under load is pretty damn good. Concentrate on getting better ventilation. I have a midtower with as much airflow as your full tower. You are probably getting hot/dead spots near your cpu/mobo.
 
Ok, turns out my front fan was sucking not bolwing but it my problem has not gone away. I took one of the 80mm fans and used a rubber band to the back of the case(there is normally place for an 80mm but in my case there are only a few holes, it is now blowing toward the CPU but it won't stay alive. My case temp without the desk fan went down to about 90-95F(35C). Do you guys think some arctic silver or a better heatsink will solve my problem? how about a delta 7k fan on the current heatsink. If so where can I but it so that if I order wednesday, it will arrive on friday (I am leaving on holiday in 2 weeks)
 
Are you using the gummy yellow thermal pad on the volcano2? If you moved it around or reinstalled the heatsink, the pad may have bunched up and created too much space between the core. Not sure if it will help in this case but some pads work better if you allow them to phase change by running them without the fan running until it hits ~57C? If its heat related, probably bad contact between the hsf and core. The volcano2 fan is equivalent to a ystech fan so its not a cfm problem.
 
That might be the problem, anyway since I don't have any thermal paste I am not going to remove the heatsink. I just dont understand why it crashes @47C, so much for overclocking. For now I am going to run it with the desk fan, it seems stable at a full load right no at 43C. Meanwhile, where can I buy Arctic silver and a better heatsink that delivers Vey fast? Any recommendations on a heatsink that will solve my problems permanently?

Is there a slight possibility I have a bad CPU?. I am a bit worried about my case ventilation, its a brand new case and I can't afford another one. Anyway, would ASII and/or a new heat sink definalely work? I am running out of time. this is really getting me depressed, I was supposed to be really happy today with my new mobo and CPU
 
I have this alchohol based After shave that I used to clean stuff once, that should work! I'll get some nail polish remover anyway
 
47 should cause it to crash at all! u definitely should RMA it if it's the CPU. but we dont'k now for sure.

I think you should have the front fan sucking in air, and rear exhaust pushing air out of the case. It does seem to be ventilation related. I run the same setup as you, 1.2Ghz with Volcano 2....I reached 44c firsttime today, due to hot weather, but it's stable as a rock. If you keep getting crashes at 47c, then definitely RMA the chip.
 
47C is what my epox 8k7a reads using CPUcool, its probably much higher then that, dammit I really don't have time to RMA it but I suppose I may have to. right now the front fan is sucking air in and so is the rear fan in order to blow ontop of the heatsink otherwise I'll be creating turbulence and making things worse! its running so stable with the desk fan, its been running SETI for an hour but as soon as I turn the deskfan off it crashes. I really din't want a delta &k as I sleep in the same room but I may not have a choice. Can anyone recommend a heatsink? I think i am going to go all out on a heatsink so that I can burry this problem permanently and IF I am lucky overclock.
 
Have you checked the northbridge chipset heatsink. Maybe there is no contact there. A desk fan would end up cooling that more than a cpu heatsink.
 
The desk fan is pointed directly at the CPU, the northbridge seems fine, the heatsink is attatched and the fan is running. I am going to order some AS11 and a new heatsink tommorow (if it doesn't work I am probably going to go insane). Any recommedations, the faster it gets here the better
 
I use either Goo-Gone, or the old standby WD40 for removing gooey stuff then wash with any alcohol (not the 12yr old Scotch) Do your homework and get the best cooler you can afford & get some AS-II. You want freshair blowing in at the fromt of your case and out at the back. If you got a cheap case then check your PSU for vents on the bottom to evacuate hot air. The idea is to get hot air out of the case while providing fresh air to replace it. YOu can't presurize it nor can you starve it for air. Just some thoughts - good luck 😉
 


i ordered a Taisol CEK747092 and some arctic silver. to test the theory that the chipset not the cpu is overheating, I am blowing an 80mm right at the chipset and so far my system seems stable (47.6C core and rising). If this is the error oh boy, I just blew all that cash on a new heatsink, oh well maybe there is some future overclocking in line for me. If my chipset is overheating what do I do? keep blowing a fan at it??? spend even more on a chipset cooler(oh man, so much for saving for a new vid card), RMA it (will still have to pay shipping. Another theory I have is that the hot air from the CPU is blowing directly over the chipset, maybe I should set the fan to suck air instead of blow it onto the CPU, what ya think???
 
50C and still going. Tonec you are the man, thanks for pointing this out. I am gonna do some more testing but this looks like the problem
 
locked up at 54C, is this normal?? I think this is the problem, now I need solutions. I don't think I can afford to spend much more then $20
 
thats really weird. i am using a 1.2 266 axia y t-bird on an msi k7t turbo. i run it at 53 under load all the time, never locked up at all. i have the volcano II and its causing no problems. I have it o/c to 1.47 ghz and 1.91 core voltage. no probs. maybe try water cooling, check out the kits at dangerden.com. they are bada$$, the maze2 block is sweet. i'm buying one soon
 
the problem is most definately the chipset, my computer is so much more stable with the 80mm fan right over the chipset and an open case. I ordered a new chipset cooling kit (cheaper then sending the mobo back) plus my airflow in that region of the case sucks. I also already ordered a new heatsink before i figured out the problem, maybe it will give me room to overclock in a few months when I can afford to screw up 🙂. I am really not looking forward installing the new heatsinks but it has to be done. I think I should invest in some rounded cables when I can afford them
