Cpu over temperature error

Hello,

My friend replaced his Core i5-2500 heatsink/fan because it was broken with an Intel E97375-001.

His computer was working fine for a while, but when he turn it on this morning there was error
CPU OVER TEMPERATURE ERROR. He show me a screenshot of his bios utility temp and it reached 195 Fahrenheit.

I'm not a computer expert... but I did some research and Intel E97375-001 heatsink are for LGA 775 socket with TDP 65W. The i5-2500 is LGA 1155 with 95 TDP.

Is his cpu fry ? Will cause any damage to the motherboard & PSU ?

That temp is right at the throttling temp for that CPU (90 C). If the fan is spinning, it is most likely that the heatsink was not installed correctly. What heatsink is on it now? What kind of thermal material was used?

This is the heatsink he was using which was pull from one of his old computer.
He'd re-apply the thermal paste with AS 5... but it still doesn't boot up.

Is this heatsink compatible with i5-2500 ?
I thought it is for the old Intel Celeron processor.

It may be compatible in that it will fit, but not as much that it will remove heat. Heat output from a Celeron is going to be quite different from am i5, and Intel sizes the heatsinks accordingly.

A push-pin LGA775 HSF will fit an 1155 board?

Actually the original i5 stock heatsink/broke... he bought it to a repair shop to replace it (i thought he pulled it from another computer).

He wants to know what are the chance the motherboard is also affected given the temp of 195F ?

I don't have any spare cpu to test it for him.
That is one major screw up by the repair shop.

Hopefully the CPU was able to protect itself. The protection is pretty robust.

I can't think of any reason to be worried about the board.

They may have successfully jammed the 775 cooler into the 1155 pin holes, and it later popped out? The mounting hole dimensions are close.

Boggles. My. Mind.

That a "repair shop" would even try to fit a 775 cooler onto a newer CPU. Or that they even could. (Unless it's an ASRock 1155 board with C.C.O.)
