CPU.. or something else? Comp. randomly restarts..

So here's what's going on..

I had an Asus A7v133 with a T-bird 1.0 OC'd to 1.33 (running beautifully and very stably). While attempting to change the HSF, I happened to damage my CPU (great going..) so I had to get a new one.. since this system was build almost a year ago, I decided not to get another T-bird but an Athlon XP 1700+ (1.47 ghz) instead..

So I install this new chip, and ALL kinds or problems arise.. It randomly restarts as if the CPU is very unstable at 1.47 ghz, and also, due these random shutdowns, it seems to have corrupted some important windows files, so now I'm having software trouble unlike any other before.. everything that I run has a tendency to just crash now.. I even reformatted my computer 3 times now, and the crashing persists..

My question is, is it really a "bad" CPU to begin with? More importantly, does anyone know if an A7V133 is capable of handling an XP? The suggested range of CPU clock speeds for this MB is actually 1.8+ ghz (FYI, I've already flashed my BIOS just recently). Could it be a software conflict with drivers or applications (I just installed multimedia applications from ATI 7500 AIW for video editing, and everything that came with my Audigy Platinum - For those that have it, Remote Control seems to crash 100% of the time about 5 min. after I start my computer). Any suggestions will help on this one, as I've tried to experiment with many different possibilities and got nowhere thus far.. THanks in advance!

1. Ok, is it just me?
I can't find anywhere where it says that your board is XP compatible. I can only find that it says Athlon and Duron compatible, not Athlon XP....It's not on AMD's list of recommended motherboards either.
So based on that, I would say your board is not capable of handling an XP processor.

2. Yes, what wattage PSU? I would normally assume that a problem like yours would be because you don't have enough power.
That could cause the instability and problems like data loss that you're experiencing.
Also maybe your power supply is failing, getting random spikes, etc.

Hey thanks for the info guys...

Amish: this might be just what I've been looking for.. by the way, bacillus, I have a 300W power supply, but I dont think that's an issue since prior to the XP, I had many other hardware components that I've removed.

Amish: I wonder if this is the same update that Asus' auto-update flashed my bios with.. I'll give it a try anyway..

EDIT: I am rethinking the power supply issue.. it's an Antec 300W PS, but maybe an XP chip is that much more power intensive? Bacillus, or anyone.. how can I test or monitor the usage of my PS? Is there a way? Thanks to all of you!

Hm.. :(

Just flashed my BIOS from 1008 to 1009.. meaning all this time I've already had at least the 1007 revision..

So my question stands.. does anyone know how I can monitor of the PS usage? I'm thinking of just unplugging a few things and seeing how that will work out..
