My PC was running fine, for months, no overclock. Then, the network device stopped working while playing a game (integrated Nvidia, Nforce 3). No matter what I tried, I couldn't get the network back up. So, I reinstalled Windows...didn't fix the problem. Following advice from Epox, I manually set the MAC address for the Network device in the BIOS. The screen flashed red, then re-booted with the MAC address re-set to "auto". However, the network then worked fine.
Two days later, the sound stopped working (integrated Realteck 805). The same thing was happening as for the network device: Control panel tells me that there is no audio device installed. Re-installing the driver didn't help. Re-installing Windows, then driver didn't help. This was accompanied by a muted tone coming from the Mobo, a two-tone cycle, high-low, high-low, that persisted even after restart (only turning machine completely off got it to stop. The tones were not as loud as a system "beep" during strat up, maybe a fifth as loud and with static. No error were reported on the LED on the Mobo.
I thought something may have overheated, so I ran SpeedFan to get temperatures. They were all fine, lower than the maximums I had seen while gaming. However, the monitor for the CPU temp (Temp2 in speedfan) was reporting a dip to 0-2 deg C every 5 secs or so. It kept repeating, 45, 46, 45, 45, 0, 45, 45, 2, 45, 46, 45, 45, 1... etc. I have never seen this before.
What I need help with: (1) Is the motherboard pooched and incorrectly reporting CPU temps and Audio device status or..
(2) is the CPU damaged and mis-communicating with the motherboard?
The PC runs fine in every other aspect except sound, so I think something died on the motherboard (perhaps related to the Network going out too).
Is there a utility or series of steps I could take to see which part I need to replace? I don't have access to other components to swap in and out. I can afford a new Mobo or CPU, but I would like to know what died.
Any help is appreciated.
