I'm not overclocking (yet) and want to know what normal temps. for this cpu are. I get low to mid 40's on idle, and high 40s low 50's on load. Having some mobo temps problems as well so just checking.

Right now I have the stock fan and heatsink that came with my 170. Can you overclock with this? If not, should I get a Zelman? Which one? The 7000 Cu/Al or 7000Cu? The 9500 seems a bit pricy.

Does the Opteron 170 come with the newer AMD heatpipe (the one with 4 heatpipes coming out one side)? If that's the one you've got, then they are pretty dang good, so give it a shot.

If not, then you can still use the stock heatsink and fan, but keep a close eye on your temps. It will probably limit you somewhat, but should give you a good idea how far you might be able to go.

The 7x00 series from Zalman will not handle the dual core that well. You will have to resort to the CNPS9500 or go with a Thermalright or Scythe heatsink with heatpipes (Si-120, XP-120 or Ninja). The Opty 170 should come with the heatpipe cooler. It is overclockable (and even better if you sand down the heatsink).

Is sanding it down safe? Does the 4 heatpipe heatsink that comes with the 170 better than the zelman 9500? For some reason under load, I get about 45C w/out OCing? Is this ok?

Actully, does anyone get temp fluxuation? At night, I get about 38-40C mobo and 30-33 CPU. Then during the day ~ 45C mobo ~ 33C+ CPU.

well, if you dont have AC on in your house, then during the day the ambient temperature will rise, and so your CPU temps will also rise.

So, the mobo is suppose to be lower than the CPU? I get a lot of fluxuation too. Mobo is 40C in the morning then crawls to 45C. CPU crawls up a bit too, but that is to be expected. Still can't figure out why my mobo is so hot....
