CPU Multiplier Settings

Hi,

I am currently comparing the different AMD AthlonXP cpus that run on the Barton core at 333Mhz,
and I am trying to figure out the difference between say the 2500+ and the 2800+.

I know a bit about CPU's and how they work, and the only noticable difference I see is that the 2500+ runs at 1.833Ghz (11.0x166) while the 2800+ runs at 2.083Ghz (12.5x166). Other than the multipliers, is there any physical differences between the two processors? If not, and all AMD does is reduce or increase the multipliers to get a new speed, then couldn't you just buy the slowest of the bunch, and just overclock (increase the multipliers without even changing the FSB speed) to get a faster speed? (I understand that the multipliers on the ealier Bartons are unlocked).

All of the Bartons made after the week 34 of 2003 are locked. The reason some chips are sold as slower chips is that they have some defect that will not allow them to run at certain speeds. Say one chip will not run at 3000+ speeds they rebadge it as a 2500+.

One other quick question for anyone willing to answer:

When you overclock, does the temperature of the CPU increase as the multipliers and / or FSB are increased, or is it by increasing your voltage that causes things to heat up.

One more thing, if you are looking at OCing an Athlon XP get a mobile 2600+ they are unlocked and OC like crazy 2.4-6 ghz on air. Yes if you OC your temps will rise so if you want to do a serious OC get a good HSF. Raising the voltage will raise heat faster than just upping the speed.
