CPU / MB problem...

Greetings! I hope you can help me with this problem.

I recently installed a CPU/MB upgrade:

MB: ASUS A7V133
CPU: Athlon XP 1800+
RAM: 512MB SDRAM PC133
Windows 98 SE

Everything went fairly well, installation-wise. Now that I am fine-tuning the system, I
have the following trouble:
The CPU is shown in the BIOS (which I updated, to support the Athlon XP), but, instead of being 1.53GHZ, it shows as 1.15GHZ
I have read and re-read the manual from ASUS, spoken to computer stores in the area, etc. No luck. I'm thinking that there must be some magical selection of BIOS settings which will correct this, but I am not brave enough to go haphazardly into that most important area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Even though it is not working where it can, it is unbelievably fast!
After following the procedure in the ASUS manual, (changing jumpers and DIP switches, the POST would be OK, but the computer would just keep restarting!) I thought there was an over-heating problem, but this was not the case. The CPU temp: 59C. Asus says that is fine. I then put things back to the default settings, and everything is fine...except that I am back to 1150MHZ!
After changing nothing but the suggested settings, I now get a couple of BSOD's:

(1)Fatal exception 06 has occurred at 0028:C0006769 in VXD(01) + 00005769

(2)Fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C0003FC6

(3)While initializing device CONFIGMG: Windows protection error.

I have gone to the Microsoft Knowledge Data Base, but I cannot find these specific error messages. Thank you all for listening, and I hope someone can help.

i would suggest flashing your bios to the newest one because i'm pretty sure the a7v133's won't support xp1800+'s correctly w/out doing so

Set the FSB to 133 instead of 100.

What are you temps when you are running at 1150? What heatsink are you using? Have you checked to make sure that it is properly installed?

Thank you, Sohcrates and Minendo. I appreciate your advice.
I have already flashed the bios to the very latest version; you are correct about it recognizing the XP processor. It still will only operate at default settings. (100FSB).
The current temps at 1150MHZ are:

CPU: 58C
MB: 31C

I am using a ThermalTake Volcano 6CU+ hsf. I am sure that it is properly installed.
Whenever I would set the FSB to 133 (where it should be), I get the BSOD's that I reported in the original message.

58C is quite warm but definitely within tolerances of safe operation

well, does your a7v133 have jumpers to set the multiplier of the cpu as well as the bus speed? if so, are you sure the multiplier is correct? (hmm...for an 1800 i assume the multiplier should be like 13.5 or so...though i may be wrong here, it's been awhile)

also, is this a new install of your OS, or did you simply upgrade your mobo and what not w/out a fresh install of the OS?

The multiplier for an XP1800+ is actually 11.5.

Did you use a thermal pad or thermal paste at all in installing the HS?

Yes, there are jumpers and DIP switches for several functions. I currently have the mobo in "jumper-free" mode; supposedly, you can make all the settings directly into the bios. I'll have to try the other method.
As Minendo said, the proper multiplier for the XP 1800+ is 11.5. I used
a thermal pad that came with the HSF.
As far as the Windows98 install question, I installed a new Maxtor HDD, formatted and partitioned it, and then used a Norton Ghost image I had on another HDD to put on this new one. It all went fine.
The temperature questions you have raised interest me. Even though ASUS says this temp is within specs, it is at the high end.
I wonder if it would be worth my while to go ahead and remove the HSF and apply thermal paste.

well, you're mentioning that windows is blue screening, which leads me to believe that it could be a drive issue. by ghosting an image, most likely the image did not have all system devices removed from device manager? if so, then windows was most likely mighty confused on first boot-up and had to install lots of drivers.

i might almost suggest that you remove everything under "system devices" and reboot, allowing it all to re-install itself. also, are you running the newest via 4-in-1's?

if not, might wanna try upgrdading those first from viahardware.com

Thank you, Sohcrates. I had never even considered it to be a OS issue. I guess that's on my agenda now. I
did install the very latest 4in1 drivers from VIA; same scenario though. Just out of curiosity I'm going to remove the RAM and replace it with brand new sticks from Crucial. Maybe that will narrow things down a bit. Again I have to thank you and hope you, and anyone else, will continue to make suggestions. I am very appreciative of all the advice,
