Looking for some advice direction... I have a 3-4 yr old sony Vaio PCG-K23 - It has a 2.8 P4 processor. Harddrive just died - so I got alittle brave - actually got it cracked open - the CPU removed.

Anybody know what CPU upgrades are possible? CPU is a socket so no soldering - I dont know about BiOS and Chipsets.

Just looking for some general direction.

If the info on this page is correct, your machine uses a 2.80GHz Intel Mobile Pentium 4 with a 533MHz FSB and an ATI RADEON IGP 345M Chipset.

The first thing you need to know is whether that chipset supports a faster CPU?

If so, you will need to know which Pentium 4 you have. I would guess it is a Pentium M. I do not know what socket your machine uses, but it's probably Socket 478 or 479.

Good luck. :)

the other thing I should share - is the laptop is for portable audio recording processing - not really needing heavy graphic.

You won't get much faster than a 2.8 in that socket.

Make sure to get a 7200rpm harddrive.....that will give you a nice boost!

How much memory is in it??

RAM is maxed out at a gig now.

Definitely going 7200 rpm - just left the local computer store and was dissapointed they only had 5400.

I am really wondering if it possible to go with a Duo CPU.

From a quick Google search, it seems your socket is capable of accepting Pentium M processors, which is a great thing. A Pentium M is about twice as fast as a comparably-clocked Pentium 4 (including the Pentium 4 M family). For example, A Pentium M at 2.0ghz will run about as fast as a Pentium 4 at maybe 3.8 or 4.0ghz. I haven't found anything that says your socket supports Core Duo or C2D, though.

In any case, look for a nice inexpensive Pentium M. Most P-M model numbers begin with 7.
