poof: nah, I gave up. Those two bits were about $5 each. I just soldered a copper plate on the back of the windowed EPROM. I'm definately not gonna try again today because so far my day at work has been going pretty #@%#ing !#%#@y and I'd end up using the drill press as a hammer.
 
I'm told that somebody else has managed to put a hole through the ceramic using a drill bit for ceramic floor tiles (not for wall tiles), and a patch of masking tape to stop the bit slipping. Myself, I'd just araldite a hook to it!
