cpu installation

if a cpu is installed incorrectly, could it cause the pc to not display a video signal?
i'm pretty sure i installed it correctly but its soemthing for me to double check.

also, i think i found out that my motherboard requires a bios update to use wolfdale chips ( i got an e8400). i should still be able to get the bios to load up to perform this update, right?

With some luck the pc will post, but say it doesn't recognize the CPU, and lets you into the bios, so you can flash the bios to a new version. I think it depends on the mobo though.

For you videocard trouble I'd try the motherboard or videocard forum.

Hehe, you do have to have a small speaker plugged into the mobo 😛 After a succesfull POST it usually beeps once. Unsuccesfull posts will give different beep codes, depending on what's wrong.

i get no beeps at all. there is no PC speaker connection on my tower or for my mobo.

There should be a header, located near where you connect the casewires for the reset/power button etc, where you can 'hook up' a really small speaker ? Or there could be some lights on the mobo that tell you what piece of hardware is not functioning properly ...

my old mobo has a small display which shows FF which means boot.

all i have on the new mobo is a bllue light.

Not necessarily -- this is a "catch-22" on some MBs. You might want to contact your vendor about a replacement MB with an updated BIOS.

all fixed
problem was bent pins on the new mobos cpu slot and i sent that back and got a different mobo.

problem with old hw was bent pins on cpu. when i was removing the old mobo, the hsf came loose and i just pushed it back down. well, little did i know that the cpu came up a little too, enough to come out of the socket. pins got bent when i pushed it back down.

trying to fix the pins and i broke one off so that cpu is a goner.

new hw is all good now.
