CPU installation question, please help

I am currently building my first PC. I am having a problem installing an E8500 into a evga 750i FTW motherboard. My problem is clamping the socket shield. It seems to require alot more pressure than I expected. Should the socket shield be able to close all the way on its own? It looks like the opening in the socket shield doesn't quite clear the edge of the cpu that is farthest from the hinge.

I know the cpu is oriented correctly, since the little notches make it impossible to screw that part up. And yes, I removed the black plastic protector from the cpu. Am I doing something wrong, or does it actually require that much pressure? Thanks in advance.

The shield that frames the IHS should come down with almost no pressure, but the lever that lock in place does require a fair amount of pressure to close all the way. As long as you've put the cpu in the socket correctly you'll be fine; matched notches and all that.

Hi mfh6375,

It should require very very little and almost no pressure at all to lock down the cpu clamp.
If you are feeling pressure than you have the alignment off. Do not preceed any further.
Check and re-check again to make sure you have the cpu in the socket correctly.

I'm pretty sure it's oriented properly. I don't see how that could be done wrong, since it has the notches. It can only go one way.

Just push it down all the way it does require a lot of force.

Before you potentially damage the board/chip, can you post a good pic of the chip in the socket and maybe a 2nd pic of the same with the clamp/bracket down?

Also, I've watched several 775 install videos on youtube. My install looks just like theirs, but nobody mentions it being so hard to push down.

Judging by your photos, looks good to me. It will require a bit of pressure as it needs to have a good contact between Mobo and cpu.

Well, I went ahead and clamped it. I didn't hear any crunching/ cracking noises, so it must be okay. Thanks everybody for the help.

Well, I got everything put together. But, I have a problem when I try to start it up. I started a new thread about this new problem in the computer help forum.
