CPU HSF Duct Mod

Has anyone ever used a duct mod on their CPU HSF? Does it actually do what it claims which is to reduce noise and improve cooling? Would the extra weight be an issue?

I used that duct mod on a system that I sold and it didn't reduce the noise in fact it was a little louder than without it. I only saw a 1c difference in my idle temp and its funny because the load temp was the same,go figure! I think from system to system the results are not the same so you may see better or worse on yours so give it a try.

That seems like a rather weak duct mod. It eliminates the dead spot from the fan, but not much else....I thought it would be setup to pull in outside air. I've always wanted to saw a round hole in my cases side right above the sink, make a tube directly to the sink and mount a fan probably on the case side. That way fresh, cool air gets pulled directly over the sink.

Bluefront, It took me a minute to realize that I wasn't looking at the back of a dryer 😀.

Seriously though, innovative cooling mod!!

Not worth it unless it sucks air from the outside. My dell has that it and it is cooler than my AMD with an SLK-800U

I find it quite amusing to read posts like "not worth it". Considering the materials involved with ducting costs next to nothing, you're only going to spend some time.

Lately I've been using ducts to exhaust heat off the CPU, rather than just blow it around in the case. This technique lowers the temps of the PSU, the ram, the Northbridge...everything. It also then gives me the opportunity to lower the fan speeds, which makes the whole setup quieter.

Not worth it? Baa......

Here's another use for the drier duct, which uses the PSU fan as the only exhaust fan, eliminates the CPU fan, and the rear case fan. Very quiet setup...

Alpha 8942/P4-2.66/drier duct/92mm case fan.....

NICE! Stuff like that works well, for a while I had ducting from my front case fan to my CPU... but the rear vent method works better with a HSF that blows air away from the mobo, like in Dells.

Baa Baa Baa..... 😉

Sentinel, you forgot to link to your duct post...... here

Probably try it one of these days when I get some time....
