CPU help...

Hey...so I found an old rig in my closet that is just missing some RAM and a vid card and was thinking of getting both and installing my current CPU on the rig to make it better. It has:

Asus P5Q mobo
I want this RAM (I believe it is compatible)--http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231166

600W Coolermaster PSU

Zalman CPU heatsink/fan

I want to install my Q8200 on there

I will most likely get a GTX 285 or GTX 260

Is the CPU...RAM and vid card going to be ok?

The ram is fine. What resolution is your monitor? If you're buying a new video card look at the ATI Radeon 5000 series. I can give a recommendation when I know your Res.

Was looking at the HD5870...my screen is 24" Samsung--1680 by 1050...

Is the power supply sufficient?

I heard the Q8200 is not much for OC'ing so i won't even bother but it's still better than what's on there now (dual core)...

There is RAM currently installed (2x2GB of Kingston but it keeps giving me BSOD when I add my current card from my current rig (HD4850)...I do play a lot of games so I would like a new vid card (plus I am selling my old rig to a friend in need)...

Are you sure the monitor is 1680x1050 at native Res? Either way if you have the budget a 5870 is an excellent choice. Hell I have a 5770 and it chews up everything I throw at it.

Power Supply is plenty sufficient.

I've never overclocked a q8200 I believe the problem lies with the high starting fsb and the low number of multipliers. It can be done but I don't know what you'll see.

Well if you're not keeping the Kingston ram I'd at least RMA if before you sell it.

What's the exact Asus P5Q you have?. I can check with Asus to see if G.Skill is supported.

Finally found the user guide...just basic ASUS P5Q--no other notations...the G Skill is supported...

My Samsung monitor is the 22" (not 24"--my mistake) Syncmaster...

Well good, glad to hear to ram will work. You might be able to save some money by going with a 5850 instead of the 5870. At your res a 5850 will run everything on the market just fine. However if money is not an issue stick with the 5870.
