Uhh...wtf? That profit is AFTER R&D is spent.
I realize that profit is after all expense. The intent there is just to show how massive Intel's R&D spending is relative to their profit and how rapidly it's increasing. For Intel to maintain it's lead over everyone else in this shrinking PC market, they will eventually have to make the though call of allocating bottom line profit to increasing R&D cost. Intel is a publicly traded company with immense pressure to show immediate bottom line result. If Intel grab just 10% of the otherwise profit to bump R&D by 10%, it might cause catastrophic panic among investors that profit is down another 10%.
