My computer started freezing every once in a while a few days ago, and it's gotten progressively worse, so that it freezes every few minutes or so now. I'll probably have to retype this post several times before I'm done. And System Restore isn?t working (no restore points, though I have it at the max allowed ? Dell Support had me replace the SR file from Service Pack 2 with the one on my original XP Home (w/ Service Pack 1) CD, and at least it created a new restore this morning, which is well after this problem happened).

*Windows XP Home
*McAfee VirusScan ? auto updates
*2Wire Wireless Home Portal firewall
*I use the most updated versions of Spybot S&D & AdAware & Spyware Blaster 2x-3x a week.
*I regularly use Disk Cleanup & empty my temp file.
*My startup menu has these programs on it: McAfee, SBC/Yahoo DSL, digital camera, mp3 player

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

Here?s my HijackThis Logfile:

Welcome to the Forums :) Your HJT log was generated using an out-of-date version of HJT. Could you get the latest 1.99 version from here (a Zip file), post it in Schadenfroh's spyware-removal thread here, and watch for his reply with guidance on how to remove the malware :) You can also try your Ad-Aware and Spybot scans in Safe Mode, after disabling System Restore so the junk can't pop right back out again.

Or if you don't have a whole bunch of time into it, consider downloading the full Service Pack 2 installer, unplugging your network cable, and starting from the top and getting everything really tight the first time, this time around: suggestions on how to do that.

go to download.com and download Ad-Aware SE.

Install it, then UPDATE the program by navigating through the menus. Do the same for Spybot Search and Destroy. While you're at it, do a manual update of your antivirus program.

Next, reboot into safe mode (usually by pressing F8 repeatedly during boot)

In safe mode, first do a disk defragment.
Start, programs, accessories, system tools, defragmenter.

When finished, run full scans with Ad-Aware and Spybot.
Then run a complete antivirus scan with your antivirus program.

Next click on start, run, and type "msconfig" in the run box. Uncheck any programs you don't need running at startup (usually a LOT of junk gets loaded automatically that you don't need. It can slow your system down and cause crashes/freezes in some cases)

After getting your startup programs to a bare minimum (usually you can disable everything but antivirus and firewall), hit apply and reboot.

Once you reboot, do another defragment.
Then go to start, programs, windows explorer. In windows explorer, open up "my computer" then right click your C: drive. Choose properties, tools, and the error checking option (checkdisk). Click all of the boxes, apply and exit. Now reboot one last time and let it run the disk check to recover any bad sectors on your hard drive. This can take over an hour if your computer is in really bad shape. Just be patient and let it do it's thing.

After cleaning the spyware/viruses off your computer, reducing unnecessary programs from loading, and fixing the hard drive, if you still have problems, the cause is likely a piece of hardware you have installed (video card, RAM stick, etc).

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the assist!

Although I had done most of that stuff earlier in the day (to no avail), I hadn't tried safe mode, so I followed your directions to the letter. We'll see what happens.

Thanks again.
