CPU for AMD HD 7770

Hi.

I have an old AMD HD 7750 (yea, I overclocked the hell out of it, max VDDC, from 1125 to 1300 VDDC, and from 800 core clock to 1200 (actually, top 1 on usersbenchmark ) and I want to buy a new CPU for it. I want an AMD cpu too, but with good IPC and single-thread performance... I looked for myself an FX 6300, but I guess it's too overkill for my GPU, and then I saw FX 4350, but it's only 4 core (i don't really want a 125tpd cpu) :/ My question is, what top 3-5 cpu do you recommend for this GPU (7750 with 7770 performance). I need it for gaming, GTA V, CSGO, etc. I need it only for avr 2 years, so that's why I want a cheap one

Don't look at any of the FX CPU's. Zen is out now. Look at R5 1600 or R7 1700 and B350 motherboards paired with ddr4 3000/3200 ddr4.

Then get a B350 board, and a Ryzen 5 1400, and OC the snot out of it. (May require AIO CLC.)

If you have a Microcenter near you, you can get the R5 1400 and a motherboard for $209. The problem with going with an older CPU is some of your parts won't carry forward. RAM and motherboard in particular. In a couple years you'll be able to stick whatever Ryzen suits you without having to buy new RAM, and a new motherboard.

Something like this is pretty inexpensive. Cheap R5 1400 build.

No advantage really to using an AMD cpu just because you have an AMD video card. This seems the ideal case for one of the new hyperthreaded pentiums and a cheap motherboard. You certainly are not going to be playing any new AAA games that use a lot of cores on that videocard. I know because I have one, and could barely struggle through Witcher 3 at 900p and lowest settings. Less than 90.00 for that cpu on New Egg. Also has higher clockspeed and slightly higher IPC than the 1500, if you are concerned about single thread performance.

If you're throwing everything away in 2 years, as you suggest. Just go to eBay and search HP 6200 or HP 8200. Pick up a Sandy tower for $100 or so, put your video card in. Then throw the whole mess away in 2 years.

I recommend the G4560, it's around the level I5s were when the 7700 was released but much cheaper.
AMD doesn't compete well against it (slower or more expensive)

Then look at a used system, a refurb sandybridge based system or better. Going the FX chip route really doesn't make sense, even if reusing old ddr3 ram you have. Just get a cheap pentium instead, especially if going with a new ddr4 based setup (so the G4560 mentioned above) if you want a new system.

Yep, I have a HD7770 and an i5 2320 (3.0 ghz sandy bridge quad) and they are a very good match. In fact the cpu is very seldom the limiting factor. Actually, I cant think of a single game in which the cpu is limiting at 1080p. I would expect the newer architecture, faster clocked pentium with hyperthreading would be at least as fast as the cpu I have.

The G4560 has roughly the same performance in gaming as a stock-clocked i5-2500K. Then again, if you have a 2500K, do you have it at stock clocks? LOL.

I would recommend a Dell 990 Minitower (not the slim small form factor) The 990 supports only Sandy Bridge CPU's, but I can tell you from experience building lots of them that they are great budget gaming rigs and with a core i5-2400 or 2500 will max out your GPU and will not hold back an HD 7850 or HD 7870 and equal NVidia types. You only have to worry about the SATA cable connectors that unfortunately might interfere with some dual-slot type cards. there is a fair amount of room for a long vid card, but you have to watch that as well. I am using one as my main computer with an i7-2600 but moved the 990 mainboard into an Antec lanboy case for more room. You will need to get a PSU with pcie pwr connection for your card as well.
I went this route because once I found out it smoked my overclocked oc'd FX 8core cpu doing 4.5ghz with a R9 290 GPU, the $25 cost of the Dell 990 with i7-2600 was a no brainer, sad, but true. My next build will be a AMD Ryzen, but not until they get the teething problems figured out.

I assume you re trying to reuse your ddr3 ram. An athlon 845 or 860k is a pretty good match. For gaming the 860k is better. FX/AM3 probably performs somewhat better than FM2 but then you might as well get 6+ cores; I'd get a 6300 or 8300. These are all fairly cheap $50-80. If using cheap 760g motherboards don't get any 125W CPUs, use 95W. I grok you, cheap can be fun.

Anyway, if you wanna go cheap ~ get an FX 6xxx or 8xxx on sale, want something more future proof ~ the Ryzen 1400 or 1600 are great VFM, need something with an IGP get an Intel.

Yep, one grandson who lives out of town I built a Dell 390 based system with an i5-2500 and HD 7850. For my other grandson a Dell 790 based system with an i5-2500 and GTX 760. We are pretty much into online Warthunder, Battlefield series games and world of warships currently and have great fun spending hours online as squad mates. Most of what I get at auction are the Dell 990 small form factor which i'll either just go thru and sell without any mods but a good cleaning, or occasionally get some 990's in the mid-tower cases which I'll put in a decent PSU and decent video card, and sell them as a gamer to locals on craiglist/facebook. Depending on what psu, vid card and memory combination you put into them they can be a very solid performer for the 1080p crowd.
