How much benefit is there in a PWM header compared to the standard 3-pin header for a CPU heatsink/fan? I recently purchased an AMD AM2 system with a PWM fan header, and I'm wondering whether it actually does a good job of monitoring and adjusting fan speed automatically. Is it worth buying a replacement fan for my Zalman CNPS9500 AM2 to take advantage of the PWM header?

IIRC, it the 4 pin header just allows for finer control of the fan speed, which Cool n Quiet would take care of pretty well on its own. I wouldn't bother, especially with such a quiet CPU cooler and the fact that the fan is probably a PITA to replace.

you're probably right about Cool 'n Quiet doing a good enough job. Surprisingly, though, it is pretty easy to replace the fan on the CNPS9500 series. Two small screws, easily accessed with a thin screwdriver.

Cool'n'Quiet doesn't adjust fan speed. The MB would have to do that or some other software.
