CPU Fan not working

After boot up the screen indicates that the CPU fan is not working. I pop off the Case and it IS working. Any thoughts ?

I have the same problem on my Asus K8Vse... I get a CPU fan error. I check the BIOS and it is running @ about 1700-1800rpm's. So, I just disabled the fan monitor in the BIOS.... No more problems

Curious - which 'screen' is giving you this info?

ie. if it is Asus Probe or some other utility that came with the mobo, it could be attempting to monitor a fan that is getting its power from somewhere other than the connector next to the cpu. So while it thinks it is not getting power, obviously it is unless you'd have a fried proc.

Some fan monitors read under a certain rpm as zero, not sure if that applies here.

You probably plugged it into a chassis Fan instead of the CPU fan molex on the motherboard. The 3 pin CPU fan thingy is supposed to control your fan speed depending on the temp of the CPU, so if it detects nothing plugged in there...

My Bios is updated, the Molex is plugged in to the right connector... It reads about 1800rpm in my BIOS setup (but is in red text) and will pull up a BIOS error after POST.
"press F1 to enter Setup"

Oh, and I have an 80mm Panaflow fan on a Thermaltake SKL900 Heatsink.

Or, reset your CMOS. Follow the directions in the manual as just moving the jumper will not always get the job done these days.

If you recently flashed it, flash it again, or flash back to the previous version.

Try it. It could be a simple fix.

The PC is over 4 yrs old. I haven't altered anything as far as connection goes. It has been working fine since I got it. Just recently has the error been showing up. It doesn't show up every time I start it up either. I turn the PC on then a black screen pops up with grey lettering and says.... "the cpu fan is not on do you want to continue ?" I don't know the actual term for the type of screen. Ill look at it again at lunch today. The pc has beeen unusually loud lately. I think it is one of the fans.

The CPU fan does have a lot of dust on it. Could it be that the dust is slowing the fan down so much that it is operating under the recomended rpm? It's an AMD 2000+ 1.67GHZ. The MoBo is quite old it's a MSI KT4V.

Get motherboard monitor, heres a link to the website http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ . It may give you more accurate results and it tells you whether your fan is going below a critical speed.
