CPU fan help

Hi,

I've got a brand spanking new P4 3.0c (800mhz FSB) retail boxed, and the CPU fan is louder than hades. It also vibrates noticably (I can feel it in my keyboard even). I'm hoping this isn't normal for the Intel fans on their high speed CPUs. Either way, does anyone know where I can get a replacement fan, hopefully one that is a little quieter? I'm having trouble locating a normal P4 CPU fan. I've checked Antec, CoolerMaster, Startech, etc, but none of them make a P4 cooler compatible with the high speed P4s. I don't plan to o/c, so I don't need anything extreme, just something that doesn't rattle my ears as well as my hands, but will still keep my CPU acceptably cool. Any help would be appreciated. 🙂

Vantec C7040 seems to work on OC machines up to 3 ghz, but I can't find the published specs.

Hiya,

Temp actually isn't a problem. I have a well ventilated case with four 80mm fans, and my system is plenty cool. My CPU fan just makes a racket, and I'm searching in vain for an alternative solution. I did find a bizarre solution at my local CompUSA (don't laugh) -- a sort of porcupine-shaped heatsink with an 80mm fan that connects to an arm that in turn screws into the top of a PCI slot cover. That just scares me... 😱

Anyway, I finally got my bios smart-speed to work. My CPU fan now reduces to 70% when CPU temp is below 65%. That's helped quite a bit. I wouldn't be so concerned about it, except that I sleep in the same room as my PC, so when it sounds like an airliner taking off, its a little difficult to sleep. 😉

Hmmm. Justed looked up the Vantec that Mark mentioned. Might be what I'm looking for. Thx!

If it's vibrating noticably, your CPU fan is quite obviously FUBAR. You could probably get a replacement from Intel, but if you want to go aftermarket, have a look at the Zalman 7000-AlCu - you'll go from extremely loud to very quiet. Its a bit pricey, but its an excellent cooler by all measures and should follow you through a couple of upgrades - even if you decide to get an Athlon64.
