Hello!

I have a Socket 423 P4 1.4 Processor and the stock Intel Heat Sink and Heat Sink Fan. Lately, I've been hearing a loud grinding noise and I found it to be the P4 Fan. I noticed that, there was a large sheet of dust :(. I blew it away and fan ran fine!. Today, I did a cold boot and fan made noise again! I shutdown and restart again and It runs fine, no grinding noise. This happens every 5-6 days or so. There is no wire obstruction.

Does this mean, I should purchase a new cpu fan? If yes, please state which kind because I'm a new @ this lol:

If not, how can I make it so that it stop grinding?

Thank You

try putting a drop of oil into the fan's bearings
that should fix it.

remove the fan and peel off the sticker behind the fan and put a few drops of motor oil or lubricant while turning the fan's blades to enable to lubricant to seep into the bearings. put back the sticker and it should be fine.

Machine oil works well (for like shredders and stuff). Bear in mind that this may only cure it temporarily..... some fans are fine afterwards while others are fine for just a while and start grinding again in which case the fan is rubbish.
