I recently posted regarding my AMD Athlon XP processor overheating. Thank you all for your advice/help.

My computer died on me last night after installing a new heatsink and fan and I am at a complete loss to what happened.

I decided to buy a new CPU heat sink and fan and bought a Coolermaster HAV-V81. I removed the old heatsink and fan, cleaned the surface of the CPU with isopropyl alcohol to remove the old wax thermal paste. I applied silver thermal paste to the CPU and installed the new heatsink etc. So far so good. The computer appeared to run fine with all system fans running etc.

However, the computer only booted to the Windows 2000 splash screen before hanging. Rebooting again resulted in the computer rebooting only to the Windows pre-start up before hanging. Numerous rebooting again only resulted in the bios screen appearing until no bios, or windows appeared at all. The computer had some sort of failure.

Prior to the failure of my computer the bios recorded the CPU temperature at 99C(!!!!): this is with the uberheat sink and new thermal paste. The heatsink had made a firm contact with the CPU so I had not incorrectly installed it. But why such a high temperature?

What happened? Any suggestions or help is appreciated.

PS

The CPU/computer was built by me six months ago and apart from the overheating had no problems at all.
