CPU does not progress

My CPU boots up, but doesnt get past the start up screen. It posts my CPU speed and just stops there. It did however go through to windows one time, but the mouse didnt work. I know it is not a motherboard problem since it started up. Any ideas? I really would appreciate any help. Thanks
 
we'll need a bit more information than you've listed so far; namely, which cpu, RAM, mainboard, video, etc.
 
I would remove anything from the case that is not vital to booting up (ie. wireless cards, sound cards, modems). Basically, you just want CPU, video, memory, and main hard drive. Once all that is out, try to boot again. If it boots up fine, add parts back one at a time until it freezes again.

Basically sounds like a hardware issue to me.
 
Well the cpu is an amd xp 2000+ and im not sure about the motherboard. It has a 256 ddr ram, a 40 gb hard drive, two cd rom drives, a floppy and a video card. I found out that the other video card I had in was faluty and would load. I know its not a mobo problem or cpu problem becuase it booted up.

I had a similar problem once (froze just after POST) and it ended up that one of my PCI slots went out.
 
The thing is that it did get past it one time. The one time it did, the mouse stopped working. It was weird. How did you figure out the PCI slot was out, and howd you fix it?

You can still boot into windows and have a hardware failure as long as it's not something vital that has failed. For instance, your sound card can go out and your PC will work fine, just with no sound.

I found out it was the PCI because when I was adding parts back in, it froze when I added the network card to that PCI slot. I switched slots and it worked fine in a different PCI.
