CPU Dead?

So I get my artctic silver 5 in the mail. Read the directions on the site, apply a small rice size in the middle, put HSF on, Twist maybe 5 degrees to spread. Lock. Boot up, Fans all start. I don't hear the typical HUMMM i usually hear, just the noise of my fans. No beeps or anything from the speakers, no signal whatsoever on monitor. Clear cmos, try again, nothing. unplug various things keep trying nothing nothing nothing. I cleaned the top of the athy 64 with rubbing alchohol, a small bit of tissue got attached to a pin which i took off and didn't think much of.. is there anyway to tell if the CPU is in fact dead? What sucks even more is that when i took off the HSF and pulled up, THE ENTIRE CPU came up with it, attached, without unlocking the ZIF. DOes this sound like a dead CPU? Is there a way to tell for sure?

Try it in a different motherboard.

To troubleshoot, remove your motherboard from the case. Place it on some type of anti-static baggy that came with the mobo. Now, plug in the memory, re-seat the CPU, video card and that's it. Now attempt to start the computer up and see if it can POST. If it does, you're gold. If not, try switching out the memory. If that doesn't work, try the CPU in another motherboard.

You might've bent a pin when removing that tissue piece. Make sure that's okay.

I diagnosed by putting Mobo on anti bag with only cpu w/ hsf, vid card, and ram on. CPU fan spins, vid card fin spins, nothing, no signal on monitor, no post. Also I tried this with a different PSU to test that. =(

DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT test on top of an anti-static bag. These bags are CONDUCTIVE. They will short out the motherboard.

Try resetting CMOS...make sure that the jumper is in the right spot.

Well crap I already tested a bunch of times on the bag. However it worked just as well as it did before. The first thing i tried was to reset CMOS, back when everything was still in the case etc, didn't do anything.

Well it shouldn't kill the board or anything, but it won't work like that.

I would try the CPU in another board. Usually if there are no beeps that means the motherboard or the CPU is dead.

Unfortunately I don't have another s754 board, nor does anyone I know. What REALLY REALLY pisses me off is that I just ordered that X800XT PE off ATI for the clearence. And my computer bites it, the day after I order the card. Guess...gotta go S939, Dunno if I can afford it though. So, if you guys were in my position would you declare it dead? I'm pretty sure it is, since apparently the mobo is fine since it spins the fans and has working LEDS....

Just because fans spin/led's light up doesn't mean the mobo is good.

Check the CPU for any bent pins.

The problem with mobo/cpu troubleshooting is you just simply have to have another board to test with (that you know is good and works) or you just can't be 100% sure. I doubt it's the CPU...CPU's very rarely die. Were you majorly overclocking it?

Checked the cpu a couple times nothing popped out at me, pins all seemed good. So it's more likely a motherboard issue? Either way... I dont want to guess and buy either a new cpu or new mobo... It might jsut be easier for me to buy a cheap mobo/cpu combo
. Because it looks like either my motherboard or cpu is dead for sure.

Another option is to take it to a local computer repair place and ask them to test it for you. I don't know what they would charge in your area but at my store I charge $15 - well worth it not to have to buy something you don't need. And if the customer buys from me, I won't charge for the testing. Unfortunately it may be hard to find a good place that would do this for you.

This almost describes my story. I turn on the computer, and for a quarter of a second athe fans spin, and then everything dies back down. Tested PSU in another comp, it worked. Then I test it with the mobo on the box it came with (use this instead of the anti-static bag!) with just the mem, cpu, and vid card; same thing. Turns out it was the motherboard, my s754 MSI K8N Neo Plat. Turns out MSI makes crappy capacitators, and one of them went bad. I RMA'ed it, and everything was perfect.

CPU's don't die from burning - they all have intensive thermal protection. So, my bet is the motherboard.

Feel the chipset, when my friend's mobo burned up the chipset got really hot but nothing booted.

Ditto, I've never had any problems doing that...I didn't know they could short out the motherboard.
