cpu data crunching can be heard

I don't like it, I went from a northwood to a prescott w/HT and now I'm hearing this kind of thing like how when we all had the old 486 computers and those crunchy bits just popped out of the computer whenever the processor had to execute some data

this is annoying, any thoughts or suggestions besides switching hardware?

You must be hearing the hard drive while it's accessing. Processors have no physical moving parts and cannot make the noise you're describing.

i'm usin' a Western Digital 80gig SE version on SATA150

I hear you can't do NCQ on boards from a drive without a controller that already has support for NCQ technology, is this true? 'cuz I'm trying to build silent PC's, suggestions greatly appreciated

i remember thinking that when i was 10

god those 20 mb hard drives in the mac se's were loud

Could be the powersupply i had an old thermaltake one which used to make noises everytime the cpu throttled in C&Q.

Hi, If you are hearing it in the speaker or phones and if it is a plugin (PCI) card sometimes the card can pick up the noise you describe from nearby devices. Try it in another slot. Also if you are using amplified speakers try turning the speaker volume up and the Mixer volume down. Good Luck, Jim

it could possibly be a cap on teh mobo?

hardware in the case is held down pretty well

uum, i have to retract that, ive also seen it happen on gfx cards, so could it be a unused chip

I had put a 9800pro in it, went to Intel Extreme Graphics 2, went to an x800pro, didn't do anything. Happened after I put the Intel CPU into the system, otherwise it must have been a coincidence. I've got an Artic Cooler on the x800pro, not that it matters a whole lot.

Took out a 10/100 NIC card. Switched X-fi Music card and 54g wireless PCI, about 2 or 3 times. Didn't work.

Guaranteed hard drive. I'm listening to it now as I run my nntp client dumping bits all around the place.

Got a WestDig-80 SATA drive, had it for less than a year. Not sure, but I'll see if the same thing can be heard with a diff. hard drive? You think it could be in result of a USB flash drive (which sounds dumb). But I am out of ideas right now.

God gave man a brain and opposable thumbs to use tools so that we could figure out and perfect the making of wine and beer - this proves that He loves us.

Don't need any brain to do pot. In fact, just like abusing tobacco (the cigarette being the prime form for abuse), the abuse of pot is prima facie evidence of stupidity. "Hey, let me smoke every plant I can find around here to see what happens!"

I can hear my CPU "Think" as well. its a strange thing. I can make it make noise byu just dragging a window around my screen.

same here. It gets annoying, like some of these 3D screensavers I have are too obnoxious because of it :frown:
Games I don't notice it much cuz there are the sound effects

I'm sorry, once again, your cpu has no moving parts and does not make noise itself when it is "thinking".

It is caused by a moving component like a HDD. And yes, changing a cpu could change the way the drive is operating, making in more noticable that the heads are changing direction.

Most likely either harddrive noise or fan noise.
If you just upgraded the cpu, maybe the new fan is making a noise, or maybe it makes less noise and now you can hear the harddrive.

I had a problem like this with an MSI motherboard + AMD 64 3200+... any time there was significant cpu usage, I would hear a whining noise. I'm talking prime95, it was not the hard drive & it was not the fans (stuck my finger in the fan for a second to make sure, every single one of them)... it drove me nuts... eventually i got a dfi nf4 + opty 165 and problem went away

Use your opteron instead? 😉

The Prescott core uses a lot more power than your northwood. Perhaps the sound you're hearing is LC circuits in the power supply circuitry on the motherboard singing. It's quite common especially with high end video cards.

Does it sound like "Snap Krackle and Pop"
If so, it the rice krispy elfs:shocked:
 Maybe just posessed

I know it isn't the HD because it is a totally different sound, and the noise (at least on mine) comes from the back of the computer, closer to the top, near the CPU area. I believe it is either inductor coil sing or some other circuitry. I doubt it is harmful though, because my old computer did that for well over a year. I think what I'll do is just finish up my side panel and put that on, seal the noise inside the comp.

Yes electronics can make noise - you don't need moving parts to make noise. Heck I can tell if the TV is on in the living room even with the speakers muted because I can hear a high-pitched tone the TV tube makes. Not everyone can hear it though because it is at the very top of the audible frequency range. I'll bet when I get older I won't hear it anymore 😛
