CPU Cooling Question

First I just wanted to thank everyone for the active board with lot's of help. This place is a gold mine.

I just got a new conroe 6600 and after reading lots of builds, I'm wondering about a cpu cooler. I don't plan to do aggressive overclocking if any. I didn't get an aftermarket cooler - just the stock cooler. Is there a big advantage to a 3rd party cooler or not? If so, what are the better coolers? Thanks again.

If you aren't going to OC the stock heatsink will do fine. Otherwise something like the scythe infinity, ultra120, tuniq tower, or thermaltake Big Typhoon are good for overclocking.

The other advantage to aftermarket is noise level I find the Actic 7 Pro is much quieter than oe and works well for my OCing as well. A lot of this is personal preference and you will have a hard time getting a positive yes or no answer. I did my research by reading the different reviews in magazines and on the net and then made a choice. Some people like to have what is "in" others will be ok with good old fashoned function. If you pick any of the choices that will come up in the top levels you will be fine. YMMV

Third party coolers are generally quieter than their stock counterparts for the same amount of cooling power.
I vote the Scythe Ninja.

If you aren't planning on doing any overclocking the stock will be just fine.
And as steve said, scythe infinity, ultra120, tuniq tower, or thermaltake Big Typhoon are good for overclocking. I would also hadd the Noctua NHU12 and NHU12F ( I think those are the correct model numbers off top my head) are nice too.

So really, they do sometimes cool better than stock, but if you don't plan on doing any OCing you don't really need to change out. Only thin i would suggest really is uipgrading case fans to High CFM Low Noise fans and maybe some artic silver 5 themral paste.

I have 3 LL cases for my AMDs. I also use the generic HSFs that came with them.

I have replaced my case fans w/Yate Loons, mostly 120mm. I have added 120mm side intake and top exhausts. My temps for all my components are quite low.

For example, my ambients 21C/28C. My CPU loads are 38C/45C, idles are 32C/38C. IMO, I believe proper air flow controls the cooling. You be the judge.
