Hi,

I wanted to ask some advice on the following:

Im buying a new pc at the end of the month. This would be the setup.
(dutch website)

Now i'm looking for a good cooler to go with this processor since im going to overclock it. I contacted the website to ask if the Scythe Mugen rev b. would fit in the case and on the motherboard. I got a reply that the memory slots would give a problem since they are pretty high on the MoBo. Also the corsair vengeance memory that I chose has a high heatsink.
They suggested to use the Scythe Shuriken rev B. But seeing the height of that cooler, im concerned about its cooling performance when overclocking the i5-2500k processor.

Does anyone have a good suggestion for another cooler?

Or if the Scythe Mugen is that good, would you suggest any other Mobo?

And one more question: Would this power supply be an overkill on this setup? Keep in mind that I want to add another 6950 gfx card in the future.

I'm sorry for the bad english.
Thanks in advance!

Grz Benhime

Almost all good heat sinks will have that problem, you can look for something smaller but it wont cool that well. I have cool master 212 and even it has the same problem.
What I have seen people do is to buy the right memory, which has hear spreader that is no bigger than the RAM itself OR remove the heat spreader. Some people have even removed them, sawed or filed away the fins and then put them back, although that voids warranty.

You can look at Corsair XMS3, heat spread on this is no bigger than the memory itself. Although I am not sure about its OCing capability...

Oh, btw, Welcome to AT!

Thanks for the uber fast reply and thanks for the welcome! Love the site!

I was thinking of getting the Kingston Hyper X Genesis memory (8gig) since those are capable of overclocking. (source)
Dont know how good tho

Yes, these should work too, the heat spreader does not look any bigger than the memory.

I agree with the hyper 212+. I am an avid overclocker and it has done very well. My only suggestion is if you want the BEST performance, would be to pick up a higher flowing fan. 100% stock though its a great cooler. Make sure you use good thermal paste though and not cooler master's stock paste :)

Vote for Cooler Master Hyper 212+ EVO revision; for $34, it will cool your 2500K up to 5.0Ghz if you get a decent chip that doesn't require too much voltage. Mount vertical, or the fan may start to get noisy over time.

The Cooler Master paste is as good as any, including Arctic silver. Don't spend the extra, use what comes with the cooler.

Thx for the reply's.
I'm just wondering if those fans fit a 1155 socket. Since those are not mentioned in the coolers description.

I got another question (since I got nothing to do but long for my new pc :p)
Im confused since i'm reading mixed opinions on what gfx card to get.

Im doubting between the gtx 560 ti and the amd radeon HD 6950 2gig. And which ones would be better for the future if i buy a second card (in xfire or sli)?

Surfing the internet makes me doubt almost everything about my new pc :p

Thx in advance!

I think the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ EVO is a rly good option like mrjoltcola mentioned. It cools better then the 212 Plus. Thanks!

I have Cooler Master Hyper 212+ and its still interferes with tall finned RAM, well, actually the FAN does.

If you are running 2 ram sticks, it shouldn't matter. You can also adjust the hyper 212+ to clear taller ram. IMO the best bet would be the 212+ and a better 120mm fan. They scythe ultra kaze or w/e is a great fan :) HIGH CFM FTW

Im still wondering if the 212+ will fit on my mainboard since it only supports following sockets: Socket 775, Socket 1156, Socket AM2, Socket 1366, Socket AM3 (mentioned on the website) and i wille have a 1155 socket CPU
