CPU comparison E4500 vs P7450, is windows experience index really valid

Hi, all

Just a quick question comparing these 2 CPUs and the windows experience index in general. I just bought a laptop with the P7450 at 2.13 ghz. The windows experience for the CPU is above 5, I think 5.2 or 5.3. I have a desktop with an E4500 that is at 2.2 ghz and the CPU score is only 4.8. Is this laptop CPU at a slightly slower clock speed really faster than my desktop, or is the windows experience index not that comparable from one comp to another?? The laptop CPU does have a faster FSB and more cache than the E4500, but I always thought of laptop CPUs being slower clock for clock than a desktop.

The desktop is running vista 32 bit and the laptop is running Win 7 64 bit. Could this account for the difference? It does seem that newer comps (especially those running Win 7) give a relatively higher score for similar hardware than my 2.5 year old desktop.

I believe Windows Experience Index numbers are different between Vista and 7 (7 being higher), but the P7450 is faster than an E4500. Completely different processor families.

E4500 (2MB Cache 2.20 MHz, 800 MHz FSB 65nm)

Seems reasonable to expect the P7450 to perform a bit better than the E4500.

Yea, it does seem the scores are higher in Win 7, especially the graphics. Some of the ATI integrated chipsets are getting scores close to what I was getting with a HD4650 discrete card under Vista. I know the integrated is better now than it use to be, but I dont think they are anywhere close to even this low end card.

BTW, thanks to all who answered. I guess it does make sense that the P7450 is slightly faster than the E4500. I kept upgrading my graphics card in the desktop, but havent touched the CPU. It is a prebulit acer system, so I dont think I can overclock.

I have an nvidia 9800GT with the E4500. Would anyone care to comment on whether I am CPU or GPU limited in most games (RTS or FPS is what I play)?

The maximum Windows Experience Index value for Vista is 5.9, but for Windows 7 it is 7.9 so yes, there is a difference.

My rig scores differently in Vista and Win7. CPU is higher and graphics higher, RAM is lower in win7 also.

CPU - 5.0 Vista - 5.6 Win7
GFX - 5.9 Vista - 7.5 Win7
RAM - 5.9 Vista - 5.5 Win7.

So ya, its rates differently even on the same system.

Hmmm. I only have my one desktop system to go by, but my experience is just the opposite. I was scoring 5.9 under Vista Ultimate 64 bit. After wiping the system and doing a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, I'm still scoring 5.9 with the identical hardware. Unfortunately I do not remember the individual component scores - only that the overall score was 5.9

Then again, I find the experience score pretty worthless for most enthusiasts. For us, we usually have a few particular areas of performance we are interested in (such as graphics if you are a gamer) and the Windows experience score is just too high level to be particularly useful.
