I had my xp 2500+ running at 3200+ speeds w/ 2.7 ddrcore (i got twinX corsair 512 pc3200LL 2x256 sticks)and a 1.725 (so a bit higher cuz my A7N8X deluxe overvolts to like 1.75 or so...) for like 3 weeks now. I got a thermalright slk800u and a vantec tornado 80mm running on a nexus rheobus. I had it oc'd like that before but didnt notice any stability problems (all cores were stock) , but finally got a few issues, so i bumped teh voltages up to teh values i got above.

so i just got home, and i turned my pc on, and it went into windows, but when i started FireBird...er..FireFox...it just rebooted for no reason, and then it booted to RIGHT before winxp's splash screen, then said a boot file was missing or somehting...so i rebooted to the BIOS to see my temps, and it was at 83 degrees C!!!!!!!!! the mobo temp was still like 30 degrees C, which makes me think it was malfunctioning for a sec (why would one be high and not make the other if its pushing air to the mobo?) i thoght the probe was reading the temp wrong, so i felt the air coming outta my fan, and it was pretty damn warm. the bios froze, and i tried again after 20 mins, and the temp slowly went back to 60...then back to its normal 35 or so degrees after i put my fanspeed controller to high. i brought the frequency back to stock 2500+ and brought my voltages back...and it seems fine now...(????) i got the pc running as i type w/ the side off and the windows open.

should i be concerned? can i bump my cpu back to 3200+ again soon? should i run prime95 or something liek it? thanks

Air cooling requires air flow. Want my opinion? Take out the rheobus, and sell it to a friend who doesn't overclock.

What pspada says. Your fan should blowing DOWN onto the cpu and heatsink. So if you can feel it blowing against your hand it ain't right!

temps shouldn't be that high if the HS&F are installed properly.

Did you use a good thermal paste when you installed the heatsink, or just slap it un?

I hear that heatsink usually needs a lapping to ensure good contact to.

aight sry for not including more info:

1)i use arctic silver ceramique
2)i have my fan blowing into the heatsink (i only said it felt warm before cuz i felt around the fins that air was coming outta my slk800)
3)the rheobus...at LOWEST its keeping the cpu cool at 37 degrees C. thats OC'd...if its at stock, im at 32 degrees C

thanks all...maybe it was a fluke??

the hsf being on backwards has nothing to do with which way the fan on it blows. There is a step on the socket, and you have to match it up to the step on the bottom of the heatsink, or you will not have good contact between the cpu and hs, and your system will overheat.

im sure its not a hardware issue. its been fine for over 8 months. i cant imagine it crapping out for no reason or a heatsink being seated improperly having an effect after that long, with no other incident in the past. i mean, it got really nice temps before, so the heatsink would have to be seated well. forgive me if that sounded arogant...but is there any possibile other reason? could some sorta power surge do it? i do have an APC surgeprotector that the pc is plugged into, and it seems to be working fine now..so maybe w/o it the cpu would be dead now?....

make sure your slk-800 has pads between it and the cpu
if you don't move the default cpu pads, or install your own pads onto the bottom of the heatsink then there will be too much pressure on the core

i just killed a 1700+ with this heatsink the other day
check to make sure the core isn't cracked and that all the cache is reported correctly by wcpuid

good luck

yes, i put the pads on the heatsink before i put it on my cpu. and my cache is reportedly working too. i guess this whole thing was a fluke??? scared THE F*ck outta me tho...thought i was gonna be out 90 bucks for a new 2500+

Yeah that mobo has "ASUS COP" so it does have overheating protection. I have my air cooled 2500+ with that same mobo running usually at 2.4ghz or higher. I have a ThermalRight 900-A, A vantec tornado thats 92mm, and have i believe 2.8 through my ram and 1.8 cpu. If your cpu keeps that up i would recommend sending that mobo back and gettign a replacement for it. One person i know kept overheating like that so we traded cpus and it ended up being his mobo. So. . . try switchin cpu's in my opinion
