CPU and RAM, does one limit the other? What affects speed?

hey guys, i currently have a 3.06b with 2GB of pc2700, I'm looking to upgrade the system to a 3.0C chip with 2GB of pc3200. now here's my questions, let's say i can only find someone to trade for the cpu, meaning i get a 3.0c with pc2700, how does that compare with the original setup? also, if i have a 3.06b with pc3200, how does that stack up too? finally, if i get both a 3.0c and pc3200, that's obviously alot faster, but how much faster than the original setup?

basically i'm just wondering, because i'm trying to trade these on the forums right now, if i end up being stuck with a mixed pair (3.0c w/ pc2700 or 3.06b w/ pc3200), what the effects will be? like does the 3.06b chip hinder the pc3200? and does the pc2700 hinder the 3.0c?

thanks!

First off do you have a mobo that can take a 3c? As for performance, youd see more memory bandwidt, but im not sure if it would be a worthy jump.

PC2700 Would hinder the 3.0C but the 3.06b would be the same or better with PC3200. Since you might be able to run faster ram settings with it.
I do agree with showtime the difference isn't that great. Not like your going from a 2GHz to 3 Ghz.

Viper96720- yeah, i read that review by tom's earlier. thanks for the link! it seems the performance difference is about 15% and mostly i'm concerned about the longevity of my system (that is, i think if i exchange for newer parts now, i'll be able to hang onto them longer and exchange them for more later).

zShowtimez- well i'm just saying because i just got this system from my dad, (it was one of the ones he got from work and they never wanted it back). and the mobo sucks cuz it's just a 4x AGP (which i've heard most video cards can't even saturate a 4x, but i'm not sure how true this is), so i wanted to upgrade to a better mobo such as an IC7 or IC7-Max3 (the OTES cooler looks COOL), then i could upgrade my cpu and ram. but it seems like it's easier to trade for a 3.0c than it is for me to sell off my 2GB dual pc2700, so i'm wondering if i should go through the hassle or not.

if pc2700 will hinder a 3.0c then i don't think i'll trade for it, because my main priority is to get dual 2GB pc3200 corsairs... since it's kinda nice to have a 3.06b which not too many people have 😛

i know it wouldn't run in this motherboard, that's why i was saying about getting another one. because either way- to support pc3200 or pc2700 or 8x AGP i'd have to upgrade the mobo, which i'm going to do. so i'm going to get probably and IC7 or IC7-Max3. mobo isn't important to me, what is important to me is knowing the kind of speed boost i'd get.

if indeed the pc2700 will hinder the 3.0c, then i'm probably either going to try to just sell/trade off my 2GB pc2700 for 2GB pc3200 first. and if i can't do that, then i'll just stick with what i have right now.

does anyone know about the 8x v. 4x AGP? someone said to me that most cards can't even saturate the 8x, i have a radeon 9700 pro, would this be true in this case?
