Is it worth the extra 100 bucks to get the C2 duo 6850 or is the 6750 a better buy. I will overclock but don't want to go too far. I do a lot of video work and need something fast.
I have another question on what type of board to get. With all the new ones popping up what seems to be the best right now? I know much is on personal preference but I just want some input. Thanks for your time.

Well, the E6850 is faster at stock speed, and also overclocks a bit higher. Whether that's worth $100 is up to you. And for either of those processors, I'd definitely stick with a good motherboard, with the P35 chipset. The current favorites are the Gigabyte GA-P35's and the Abit IP35's.

Someone mentioned the Q6600. Would an oc Q6600 to 3.0 be faster then a 6850 to 4.0? Would these oc's run too hot with air cooling and a slow and low noise fan?

Forget DDR3, by the time you need it, you'll need a new MB for the new Socket 1366 coming with Nehalem.

Very few applications can use the Quad, the only ones that come to mind are video encoders. In your Q/3 vs D/4 scenerio, the 4GHz Dual Core would win most benches. However, highly unlikely you'll get your C2D to 4, more likely 3.5GHz.

I have just seen many get it to 4 and much higher is why I say 4.0. From 3 to 4 isn't as great a jump that is used to be.

I have 4 quads, 3 @3.2 or better, that doable with good hardware on air. I have seen very few C2D's @ 4 as others have said (maybe on phase change??)

If you want the best motherboard, get a Gigabyte P35-DQ6 (if you can still find one). I have a thread about what a difference it made over my P5K. They also have an X38-DQ6, but someone said the bios neede a little more work, so I can't say, but I have 2 of the P35-DQ6, and they absolutely rock !

Because the architecture just isn't designed for the higher speeds. We aren't saying it's impossible for you to get it to 4ghz, but it's not common, and even at stock speeds, it's gonna be faster than what you have.

What video encoding software do you use and what OS? You might actually benifit some from a qual core depending on the software you use, however they won't OC as high as the dual core. As others have said 3.5-3.6ghz is a pretty reasonable expectation with the dual core.

If you check the average OC's, you will find that (for example) E6300's will do 3.4 a lot of the time, thats 1.5 ghz, but as the speed of the stock chip gets faster, the OC is less. They are all the same chips, just binned different,
