My current mob is an ASUS A8V Deluxe. I have a Athlon X2 4200 cpu. Based on the 939 mob and my 4200 would I notice an increase in performance if I moved up to a 4800? Also what is the performance difference between the X2, FX and OPTERON. Would one of the FX or OPTERON's be a better choice? With the price drop I wouldn't mind upgrading if I could see a performance increase.

It goes something like this:

FX-60 @ 2.6GHz
4800 X2 @ 2.4Ghz
4600 X2 @ 2.4Ghz (1/2 cache)
4400 X2 @ 2.2Ghz
4200 X2 @ 2.2Ghz (1/2 cache)

The 1/2 cache thing doesn't make all that much difference, in nearly all tests the 4600 is as fast as the 4800. The clock speed does make a difference, but to go to a FX-60 you're only looking at a ~18% increase in speed for a lot of money.

What are you doing with the computer? If it's just gaming you wouldn't see any improvement at all. If you're encoding movies then it will make a notable improvement, but it's probably not going to be cost efficent.
