I hope this shows as clearly to you as it does to me, that we need to ACT immediately. I am about to begin another thread on Anandtech, looking for volunteers to do some relevant research. When we finish, we'll start another thread addressed to all Anandtechers, presenting our results, conclusions, and instructions for everyone if they wish to act in their best interests.

I am with you. I dont like this at all and would do whatever I could to stop it. I am sure we have guys who work at IBM here that call fill us in some more on this. This would be an IT's nightmere and I can see all the lawsuits flying already not only between endusers and companys but corp vs corp as well.

I don't think there's much to worry about. Unlike the makers of DVDs, where they have an incentive to go with encryption schemes because their products are the ones being pirated, hard drive makers neither have the incentive, nor the suicidal urge to waste money and alienate their customers.

At least one major hard drive maker won't go along with this, and chances are the only one or 2 that do will be down the drain 10 years down the road, unless they make this encryption required by law, which I don't forsee happening in America or any other country.

Ever heard of Goldfinger? What about a Mod Chip. These are two hardware devices that break "copy prtection", one for the Playstation, the other for CPU multiplier lock. Remember that guy who had the thread, wanting to replace his FSB controller or whatever? As long as "the man" tries to make it protected, there will be people with the willingness and know how to circumvent (my big word for the day!) those measures. Besides, the amount of lost revenue for a company trying to push these products would be insane. However, I *can* see this becoming something high security facilities would uyse, such as military and banking perhaps, to try and secure their data. But for the home user, not gonna happen.....(knock on wood?)

Hear, Hear. I just wish and hope that we all do not have to go through all the hassle of having to make mods of harddrives. Who would ever of thought that we would ever even have to discuss this in the first place?
