So get this.....I am out of state for the next couple months for work. I have a apartment with Cox high speed internet. I been using it for the past 2 days without any problems. I come home today and i cant get on the internet. I did all the usual things: restart the comp, release/renew lease.

So i go to the apartment office and tell them I have a problem with the internet and they gave me a number to call for tech support. I call Cox and the guy basically walks me through everything I did myself....aside from pinging a couple IP #s I wasnt familar with.

About 20 mins of doing this I am still unable to get on the internet and he puts me on hold. He then comes back and says my IP address and MAC address have been blocked because of "viruses" on my computer. I told him I had up to date virus protection software and didnt think I had any. He then told me to run my virus scan again and call back and they could unblock it.

So I run a full scan and nothing pops up. I call back and speak to someone else and the guy cant find any trouble tickets from my apartment. He couldnt tell me much and couldnt find any way to help me get back on the net.

Finally, I just manually changed my IP address and now I'm back on the internet. Now my question is can a cable provider just block access because you have a virus? That just sounds absurd.

If its blasting traffic YES! I worked for a dial up isp for a few years and we would block you if you were "blasting" traffic (i know its hard to blast on dialup"

Like I said, I just moved into the apt - connected the computer, paid some bills and went to sleep. I came home the next day and the internet was dead. This computer just had everything formatted so I highly doubt there was a virus on it.

I'm not sure how they could just block me without a explanation or warning. I still have not heard anything back from their tech support and have been using the .10 IP # since.

you don't have your own modem. you are connected to other computers in your computer complex. therefore, they can block your access so you can't infect other computers on the network. the same thing happened to me a while back when i lived in a complex made for college student. i didn't go to all that trouble though, because as soon as i opened a web browser it told me i had a virus and needed to remove it so i could reconnect to the network.

Yes, I understand that but why am I not getting any problems now that I switched to a different IP? I wished they gave me a message saying that i needed to remove a virus. I am 100% sure that there is no virus on this computer and that its possible the people living here prior to me did have something and I had to deal with their problem.

What most likely happened is since you were gone the lease on your IP ran out and somebody else picked up that address. Would need more details on your specific service and how it is setup.

Also your provider can block you for any reason. Specifically if you are causing harm (virus).

Why can't they change their name from Cox? It's disgusting.

there was an ad a few months ago, i only saw it once.
the guys says 'I LOVE COX' in some weird voice.
kind of like coach K saying 'I love Duke' in that ad that plays around March Madness.

Has to be interesting when someone asks you where you work...

"I work for Cox"

I always get a chuckle when I say that. :p Moreso after the powers-that-be decided to drop the "Communications" part. We're just supposed to be Cox.

That's got to be close the giggles people that give Hoover Dam tours get.

"And over here are the dam turbines"

"Thanks for taking the dam tour"

Let me get this straight ... they removed your cox ?!? :p
