Mars will appear as large as the moon, huh? If I saw that I'd tell my loved ones goodbye, because that would mean something very bad is occuring.

In my experience, most people are literally astronomically ignorant. Most people probably don't know how far the moon is, let alone Mars. 34.65M sounds like a lot if you don't know the concept of an AU or a light year, and even then it's sometimes hard to fathom.
