$72,000 is why..... after 4 months experience with GIS here. Another girl had left after about a month for the same job early last year.

I make $35,000 now, at the 1 year 4 month mark.

I knew working for oil companies paid better than working for a contractor, but damn, 100% more??? I guess the oil boom is paying off, for them.

ARGHGHGH!!

I am. I've been looking for government jobs, but for $72k, I'd say screw public service.

It's a she, and I have no idea how she's getting 72k. It's not even an actual job to start with I believe. It's some kind of training program.... Strange. No GIS is listed on their career search

When I worked the refinery shut-downs, the OCAW workers made close to $30/hr with LOTS of overtime, PLUS they had some great stock option programs in place as well. The majority of plant mechanics were making $100K or more, and I thought the operators made even more than they did.

I used to work for ExMo and wish I still did. They paid great, had fantastic benefits, and provided their employees the chance for a *real* career path.

I work for the gov (patent office) and you can expect to make 100+ base within 5 years without going into management

not bad for a gov job

Go to WWW.USAJOBS.COM and see if there is anything.

With Gov don;t worry about starting pay look at max pay (GS level) of that job. The low pay is starting and max is what you get after 2-3years on average.

Yeah, I know about the GS grades. With one year of experience, I guess I qualify for GS-06. I have an active Forest Service app and my resume is searchable on usajobs. I even set my Forest Service app to show for GS-04, and I get nothing. I don't know if you have to be a crony or what.

Most of the other cartography jobs I see want programming experience, which has nothing to do with cartography. That may be why I don't get any hits on my resume.

I'm also annoyed because it's like dealing with a brick wall. I had gotten a response for a NOAA oceanography job, but after I sent them the letter they requested, I got nothing. I had to log in to their damn proprietary agency job app, to see that I was disqualified for lack of specific experience, which was not listed on USAJOBS. Even emailing GIS Specialists at NPs to see if they need volunteers, I get no reply. They can't just say "no thanks"?? I doubt having done an internship at Yellowstone helps me one bit.

Speaking of Yellowstone, they don't reply to my emails either. The other interns I worked with say the same thing. What the hell... You use my maps, that I made for $100 a week, for a funding proposal, and you won't even send me a copy when I ask or even acknowledge my existence? I write a tutorial for a paid employee to do my unpaid job after I leave, and won't send it to me to use as a sample?

That's why oil companies only show that they only net ~ $7%. They pay so much out to employees, the CEO, etc. that they just aren't making any money at all. LOL

If you are not a Vet you will lose even if you score higher, just the rules.

Also every job you apply for makwe sure you re-write your resume to fi that job. Look for keywords in teh listing as that is what the system looks for. If you make it that far then a human sees it and you might get ranked high enough to make the top 3, rule of 3.

Apply for the jobs and check every week. Postings are run anywhere from 1-2 weeks on average.

You can go work for them for great money to begin with, but as my GF's dad found out you can either take a pay cut in 2 years or loose your job when they outsource it.

anybody know what 3D CAD software they use in the oil industry ?

not trying to hi-jack the thread, just notice a group of people that seem
to know about CG (GIS is a form of CG ?) & the oil industry.

i was reading a report at Matt Simmons investmenk bank company
website. they manage about $60 billion and are based in Houston.
one of their most recent presentations, Matt talks a lot about rust
and names a figure for how much it will cost to replace depreciated
& rusted, leaking, about-to-blow. it's a huge number.

my friend and I started working at the same time in 2004, both at ~$60k (engineers). He makes over $100k/yr now and looks at me like I'm crazy cause I don't make anywhere near that.

He works for Exxon Mobil, I don't.

I don't know what CG is (computer graphics?), but GIS isn't really like CAD. Think Google Earth-- that's a simple viewer version of a GIS
