Actually it is because smokers produce more blood cells to accommodate lower oxygen levels from inhaling all the nonsense in smoke.
More RBC = easier to grab on to lower O2 in the lungs at higher elevations.
It is the basic concept behind blood doping in professional sports and the reason why bicyclists train in Mexico City for big events.
Mexico City is a high elevation city so the lower O2 during training forces your body to produce more RBC causing a higher hemocrit which translate in more O2 in the body for use when competing at a normal elevation.

I'm calling BS on this. I'm an alpine climber, and I've climbed with smokers. To the best of my knowledge, none of them have ever made a summit with me - every last one has had to drop out very early, usually around 9000' to 10,000'.
I've always imagined you shirtless like a lumberjack and with two cigars in your mouth at all times...

Edit: I mean to say that I sort of just always thought of Ned as a manly man who loves to smoke, and his post made me realize he doesn't smoke, thus my entire illusion has been broken 🙁
2 cigars is awesome!!!! And yah, I can sorta see Ned in that same light ... or at least could ... until he said he's not a smoker! That said, I still wouldn't challenge the man to a duel 🙂
A cigar for each nostril! :awe:
