I will tell you why the iAudio X5 is way better than any iRiver mp3 player. iAudio supports Linux! One of the few companies that actually test their hardware on linux and at least put some effort into reaching the linux community. The new iRiver mp3 players from what I have read don't work in Linux. Supposedly older iRiver models do but not the new ones.
Reason (no specs from manufacturer, really new hardware, etc):Wintel. iRiver's got some deal with Microsoft

I won't buy anything that won't work with Linux, espically somthing that is catered to only work in Windoze, wich sucks and has many, many security holes that they don't care to fix. So I discourage anyone from buying an iRiver, since I am an open source and Linux activist. The only mp3 player for me is an iAudio.

Any player which follows the universal mass storage standard should work with Linux. These include iriver, iaudio (jetaudio), archos and neuros players. While ipods do follow this standard, they need specialized software to put music on them in a playable format, so for all intents & purposes don't support linux. (While there may be a 3rd party hack, it'd be unsupported, so doesn't really count - further, I can't imagine any linux users purchasing an apple product)
