First off... The LA Times article you referred to is requoting the actual interview, which was done by NBC Channel 4.
It sounds to me like Schwarzenegger is collectively referring to statements that he made during the 70's, not the single article which the Democrats are trying to nail him to.
First he says he cannot remember what he may or may not have said in the interview. Fine. Now, he is saying that he exaggerated and made stuff up in the interview.
Reread the quote. He refers to statements, exaggerated situations, getting headlines... these are plural: collective references, not singular ones.
I couldn't find a link to the actual interview done by NBC4 - maybe someone will have better luck...
