There might be another reason and that is doctors doing absolutely nothing until it's too late. Cousin recently got sick in TX, doctor sent him home and told him to drink water. Luckily his former PCP from LA was on call and prescribed steroids among other medication. After 3 days, he is no longer in danger of dying.
So what? Getting vaccinated moves that scenario out of the picture.

Exactly. My Mom has an auto-immune condition and is on a very powerful biologic immune suppressor (Plus MTX and prednisone). So powerful that she would have to wait months off it, for any chance to form a decent antibody response and once she started again, it likely would get pushed back down to useless again.
People like my Mom rely on healthy people doing the right thing to establish solid herd immunity.
Any healthy person not getting a vaccine is a selfish prick.
10X that for any health care workers not getting immunized as they end up interacting with the most vulnerable populations. COVID ravaged nursing homes in many places.

With few exceptions, we can file them under the Darwin effect.
Likely 99%+ have no reason not to become vaccinated other than their own stupidity. Exceptions do exist, but are a tiny fraction, example: I have a friend dealing with Lyme disease, and her specialist has advised her to not be vaccinated.

How can an unvaccinated be convinced to vaccinate when they do not believe that Covid is real in the first place? It takes thousands of deaths to get some people to vaccinate yet only one sign on some road posted by some covid denier to convince hundreds NOT to vaccinate.
And THIS is the problem, and the crap people believe in. Even if a group of hospital ICU workers sat down and told their stories with caring for Covid victims and watching the covid deaths, those covid deniers would still refuse to believe the nurses and the doctors. Covid deniers would be convinced that the doctors and nurses were paid to fake deaths and were all part of the covid lie. So... where does one go from there? You can't reason with these people, and hard facts mean nothing to them.
We have some 47% of Americans now vaccinated and still a majority who are not. It is a miracle that covid is controlled at all, given those statics. And no thanks to the 53% who refuse to vaccinate. As Dr Fauci said, if you have people that refuse to vaccinate, then you get variants. If everyone is vaccinated, then Covid can not mutate into a variant. So if some more deadly Covid variant comes along in the Fall or this Winter, we have those Covid deniers and anti Vaxers to thank for it.

I agree with the problem but I think your numbers are off:
See How Vaccinations Are Going in Your County and State (Published 2022)
See where doses have gone, and who is eligible for a shot in each state.
66% of adults have at least one shot, 56% have both.
It's 12-18 that's lower, and below 12 isn't eligible yet. When everyone is included including children below 12 who aren't eligible, the numbers are: 54% at least one dose, 46% with both.
That's not to say these are great numbers and they are positively dire in place like Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana...
