Court Upholds Bible Class Ban

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee (AP) -- A federal appeals court has upheld a ruling that argued weekly Bible classes are unconstitutional in the public schools of Rhea County, the same county where the "Scopes Monkey Trial" pitted creationists against evolutionists 79 years ago.

Edgar ruled that the Bible Education Ministry program in Rhea County violated the First Amendment's clause calling for separation of church and state.

Hmmm...so some important people, educated in the Constitution think the First Amendment does call for seperation of church and state, even if not explicitly stated.

well you can argue over how explicitly stated such things are, but those educated in the Constitution usually have the upper hand. 😉

These backwoods dimwits are still trying to push religion into their public schools? I think they should have a choice. Teach creationism in federally funded public schools and not have any science in their hospitals and industries or benefit from science and keep religion out of their schools. People should live by their beliefs. If you don't believe in science, don't try and use fancy medicine.

I'm fine with this. Now they can go ahead and mandate tax relief/vouchers for those of us that choose not to use the crumbling secular public school system. Anything else would be intolerant and bigoted.

Infohawk,

Just because someone believes in Creationism does not make them anti-Science. After all, if one believes that God created the universe than who was it that created science, mathematics, physics et all? God of course. Don't make the mistake of equaling science with atheism.

The supreme court is full of tards.

Did you read the article? This was a district court of appeals in ultra-conservative Cincinati.

You got that part right.

I doubt it, but it's amusing to note the word 'Supreme' isn't even in the title. 😀

Bugs objecting to limits being imposed on christian indoctrination, go figure... 😉

Yup, I'm sure Bugs (among others here) would actively support a Christian indoctrination program in our public schools, just like Pakistan's infamous madrasas. Kids can just rock back and forth while memorizing the bible all day long, forget about those other "heathen" topics like science, math or english.

I would say that even at the most funadamentalist of christian schools in the US, you couldn't be farther from the truth on what is taught. In my town, folks are begging to get into the catholic school just to get their kids out of 'gangbanger high'.

True that. I'm an Athiest but I sent my Kids to a Christian High School so they wouldn't be subjected to the gangs and stuff. Hell I even had to pretend that I was a Christian to get them in🙂

"Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion..."

I'm not important, but I can read.

And I have seen what happens when government and religion are not separate. Can you say TALIBAN?

So put two and two together and you'll see that some Christian teaching would actually make public schools a much nicer place no matter what bone-head judges think.

The mix doesn't work out well in either direction. Most American Christians are Protestants who should recall why they originally broke away from the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church directly ruled many areas of Germany and Italy at the time of the Reformation. They were too focused on being a government and finding ways to fund their wars in Italy and too little focused on religion.

so put two and two together and realize that it costs money to send your kids to a private school.
i seriously doubt that a bible class or ten commandments on the wall is going to cause the root of the problems at 'Gangbang High' to disappear like magic.
will they?

That's it. Ignore the situation by putting your children in a Christain High School. Your children go out at night right? What's not to say that one of those gang bangers puts a gun to your childs head on a lighted street corner.

Changing schools isn't going to make your child safe. Try to solve the issues at hand instead of trying to avoid them because in the near future those high school gang bangers are going to be street criminals and guess what... You and your children will be victims because you refuse to do anything about it.

The victims are the poor inner city children. Your children aren't victims because they get every damn thing handed to them! They have the opportunities to succeed in life while inner city youths have nothing!

I was making an extreme example. Problems with gangs in public schools (or whatever) is really a seperate issue. What's being objected to is bible class in the context of the public schools. If you want to send your kids to a private religious school, great, they can teach whatever they want.

Christian teaching had nothing to do with it. I paid for private schooling at a school that had a dress code and was too expensive for the white trash to attend.

Why should I pay so you can religiously brainwash your kids. Brainwash um on your own dime.
