O got the same coupons in the mail. The Towelette coupon expires 8/30/03. Not sure if the Internet coupons are the same though

Lenscrafters is crazy expensive even w/ coupons. I would suggest that you guys find a good looking frame and take it to Costco. They have the Invisibles coating offered along w/ the Featherweights or whatever Lenscrafters call this gimmicky stuff. I lost one of my lens one night while clubbing (which I still don't understand since I was wearing contacts that night - oh well - the night was pretty fuzzing anyways). Point of the story is, I got estimates from Site for Sore Eyes and Lenscrafters and both were near $200 if not MORE (for just basic lens made from polycarb). I went to Costco and got the lens replaced w/ polycarb, invisibles coating, and featherweights (which isn't really even necessary but an expensive addon from SfSE and Lenscrafters for $90. It took them 4 days to get it back to me.

last year I bought a pair of "expensive" glasses from Lenscrafter for my daughter. It lasted till now. Now she need new glasses. I got her a "cheap" pair at Costco, it broke in less than a month! But since the purchase date was more than a month (it took 3 weeks for glasses to come in) I can't return it. Costco price $68, Lenscrafter price $178. So it's more than a hundred but less the 6 weeks wait now that I need to get her a new pair.

So I think sometime expensive is the way to go. :)

I'm guessing your daughter is like 10 in which case I bet she loves getting new frames and she'll brake them anyway. But no matter how you look at it, three weeks! buy metal frames! they bend instead of snap.

That's quite true - but I was not suggesting that you get the whole thing from Costco - IMO their frames are cheapish - you can get better quality frames elsewhere - it's the amount that you save on the lens that saves you money. Lenscrafters and Site for Sore Eyes don't really get you w/ their frames, they get you w/ the several hundred dollar lenses.

There are a lot of different types of polycarbonate, and also for the same type, a lot of manufacturers are making it. Walmart and Costco use the cheap type of polycarbonate, that's why their prices are cheap. And the customer service at Lenscrafters cannot be beaten, each pair of eyeglasses goes through 3 different check out stations, so you get exactly what the doctor prescribed. At Walmart and Costco, they go through only one check-out (if they even bother), and their standards are pretty simple, if the customer can see, then we've done our job.
Do you have insurance? Lenscrafters take a lot of eyeglasses plans from insurance, ask them for that, if you have Alliance, you shouldn't pay more than 100 for featherwates invisible (AFAIK, Walmart and Costco take very limited number of insurance plans)

Just a thought based on my personal experience with Lens Crappers. They tend to (not with out exception) place their emphasis on quantity instead of quality when it comes to fitting you for eye wear. My wife and I both got mediocre fittings with "coupons" (emphasis on the quotes) then had to get new glasses at another optometrist when my wife's frames broke and I got tired of having to tilt my glasses to have adequate vision beyond 10 feet.
To all Lens Crafters employees out there I cannot speak to your work ethic or ability but the simple fact remains when the person who owns the company is personally responsible for the service they provide you almost always get a better product/ service.
DO NOT WASTE TIME OR MONEY ON LENS CRAFTERS.

On the subject of eyewear --

A few weeks ago, I went to Pearle and bought a new set of glasses. (Not looking for a debate on the merits of Pearle, vis-a-vis those of Lenscrafters. I have reasons for choosing Pearle, but if you're happy with Lenscrafters, fine.)

The expense was comfortably up there in the 3-figure range, but I have no cause for complaint, since most of the expense was due to my having opted for certain pricey "options," most of which are actually necessary and/or useful, given my particular situation.

But here's the interesting part -- for an extra $25, Pearle offered a Protection Plan, whereby if any any time in the next couple of years, the lenses or frames I bought from Pearle become scratched or broken, they will repair or replace them free of charge. No questions asked; it doesn't have to be a manufacturing defect or anything like that. Owner negligence or carelessness is covered, too.

Now, normally I don't even consider buying extended warranties, but just as I was reading the terms of Pearle's extended protection plan, I had a mystical vision of my glasses falling into a piece of heavy machinery about 18 months down the road, and suffering damage eerily resembling that which would hypothetically result were I to take a big hammer to my glasses and intentionally smash them to bits.

I figure it's nice to know that I'll be getting new glasses, for free, should my mystical vision come to pass. And I'm pretty sure it will.

Yeah - $25 isn't bad for glasses - part of my last set of frames broke off (the nose piece - one side) and I got them replaced by Lenscrafters - which was really cool of them.

While I can't speak for the Costco QC, I do know that my current set of lenses are superior to my last set from Lenscrafter. My last set w/ the featherweights / invis - starting smearing the orange coating after a few months. It wasn't too annoying as it was on the corner of my lens but I really wasn't expecting that. But that just might be a freak coincidence. I think they both use the same materials but that the Costco ones can price theirs cheaper since they do them in bulk b/c instead of doing them instore and getting them back to the person w/i an hour, they ship it to their eyewear processing place and ship it back to the store. I wouldn't say I won't go to any of them anymore but I'd like to just reserve them as last resort kind of option. I was lucky that time I lost my lens b/c when I found out about the Site for Sore Eyes $99 contacts deal, they were able to give me a spare set on the spot so I could see again.
